Next weekend we are going camping to Kellingheath in Norfolk. It will be the first time we have taken our two children camping and need to know how to ensure they are warm enough. Our tent is an Aztec Falcon 8 and has SIG in the bedroom pods and living area. My babies are 17 months and 5 months. We were going to take the travel cot for the 5 month old (Megan) and put her on top of a sheepskin, in a vest and quilted sleep suit, with a baby sleeping bag and cellular blanket. The 17 month old we were going to have in bed with us, we were going to put a fleece banket under the airbed, then sleep in a double sleeping bag (400gsm, I think) under a 10 tog camping duvet. I was going to dress him in a vest and sleepsuit. Does this all sound about right? I would hate for them to get cold. We usually camp in the summer (june usually) and sleep on top of the sleeping bag and under the duvet.
Make sure you take hats for the kids. When we camped in the cold our hats and socks help to keep us warm. Mats under the air beds and a fleece blanket. Good luck.
I am quite close to Kelling Heath, we also went there last year. I went camping over Easter which was about 7degrees at night, with my 2 year old and 9 year old and we were fine even without EHU, which we just don't do.
You seem quite sorted - the best thing I ever got my little girl was a camping cot - which is all sealed in, she was so warm and toasty when we went I actually had to take her blanket off!
Make sure you don't end up overheating! especially your little one. I think having somewhere warm and cosy in the morning is very important too, so just take lots of blankets/picnic rugs to create a little soft warm area for playing/crawling - my little girl lives in her waterproof dungarees and boots this time of year!
I think you are going to boil, actually! Please watch out for overheating the baby. Have you considered one of you sleeping with her and one with the toddler? It`s far easier to keep a close check on a baby`s temperature when you`re in together, and you won`t disturb your toddler when you have to get up to her at night.
I had an extra wide single sleeping bag (one without a hood)for myself and whoever was the youngest baby. Hubby shared a double airbed with the boy(s), but each of them had their own sleeping bag. We used Vango Nitestar Baby and Midi bags, according to size, and none of them ever seemed to need more than PJs or a babygro at night. I much preferred sleeping with the baby because I breastfed and it was so nice not to have to get up for feeds. Anfd Hubby would look after the older one/two.
Hi kym, I am also going camping next weekend to West Wales. I have 2 children aged 10 & 9 and we have been taking them camping since they were babies. I think you need not worry about what you are taking and I think they will be warm enough with what you are taking.
Thanks Val, Meg doesn't actually wake up in the night (got them trained righth from the start!, or just very lucky) I am nervous about having her sleep in bed with one of us as we've never done it and I wouldn't want her to wrigge under the covers. Do you know any where that sells the Nitestar bags? They sound excellent. I was going to take a thermometer and adjust the bedding accordingly, I just don't really know what sort of night time temperatures to expect.
Thank you all for your help, please keep it coming
