How long can I reasonably expect my tent to last. Its a SV8 with a polyester flysheet. The guy at Highbridge caravans told me about six years. Yeah I know it's to do with the exposure to the sun but I'd hoped for more that that. Looking on about half a dozen long weekends a year.
Six to seven years is generally regarded as a good lifespan, yup. If you use a tent a lot out in sunny furrin parts then they can last as little as three years. You might get a couple of years more out of a tent you use less often in the grey old UK climate, but don`t bank on it.
Cotton canvas tents, on the other hand, can last thirty years easily if looked after. which means in real terms they`re not as expensive as first appears.
Don`t worry too much about the lifespan of your tent. Use it, enjoy it and chances are you`ll be lusting after a different one in five years anyway.
My frame tent is over 35 years old begining to look dated now with just netting to cover window and weather hood over said window to stop rain coming in

Blimey!
You should put some pics in your gallery of it, would be interesting to see what it looks like.
If I have to keep my tent more than 3 years i'll be gutted. I'm sure i'll find one I really must have by the start of next season.................maybe even before the end of this season.
it'll still be cheaper than 2 weeks in a static in Clacton

My family had a canvas frame tent we were still using after 30 years and we have now passed it onto another young family and it's still going strong. Yes the brown, beige and orange is a little dated and as for the flowery orange and brown curtains very retro
We had good intentions to keep ours for 5 years, Changed it after 3, just got greedy and wanted a bigger one. Thing is there is some really cracking deals at end of season and you just cant resist, paid £149 for first 4 man and £179 for second 6 man. Find another holiday for that price. Even if you bought another every year it would still be cheaper.
Nylon tent suppliers say average 5 year life span, my mum and dad have just got rid of a small canvas tent that we used when I was 16, I'm 38 now. It still looked great, but to buy new one would be over £350.
Its not so much the money though I just think you need a change.
Well, something extraordinary had better come along because, despite all the looking, I don't want anything more than the one I've got. I love the size, layout, features, ease of pitching and taking down.

Hey, you just described our 6 berth frame tent exactly, there!!!!
We have all our tents pitched outside and for a Polyester tent the worst we have had a tent last is 5 weeks, but the record goes to a Sunncamp Day room last year 5 months and then the holes appeared in a heavy rainstorm.
We reckon normally on 3-4 months solid use before the tents are unusable, Does not sound long but two weeks holiday a year and a couple of Bank Holidays means about 5-6 years.
One thing I have learnt as well is that if you put your tents up over a cold winter they last much longer than in a hot summer..lol...With the hot weathethis year we have been changing our show models already.
The interesting point people may like to note is that the level of proofing does not seem to make to much difference, believe it or no its the colour!!!
As a businessman I wish I could still fill, the display area in Frame Tents, Polycottons like the Bear Lake etc, save me a fortune in changing show models!!!

David from Camperite
So what colours should we be looking at then?!!!! We are doing a trial weekend away in a cheap Tesco tent, and if we like the experience we will get a decent one. I'm looking at the blue ones, LOL!!!!
Mine's over 20 years old, much used and abused by myself and two (now grown up) sons. It's been mostly used in the UK but has managed to survive scout camps and a three week tour of Spain/Portugal with a group of lads in there twenties.
I seem to be one of the few people on this site who doesn't feel the urge to change tents regularly. I think if you research well and buy good quality then you can expect to get your money's worth - I certainly have!
My parents bought a big ridge tent from Barretts of Feckenham in 1965, they passed it on to us, OH and his mate finally managed to kill it off in a gale at Sun Park in Salcombe, must have been early 80s. This tent is the only one I have seen with a green and white striped flysheet, very easy to find at night!
