Hi All,

I'm a new member here and have really not done much camping apart from two weekends last year in a friends tent which was a really enjoyable tie and now I've been given a 4 man tent I think I should make use of it and would welcome any advice that can be given here.

Q. You know how they say tents are 4-man or 6-man tents etc. how on the earth do you fit that number of people in the tents unless you are sleeping on top of each other?

Hi Andy,

welcome to the madhouse!!

Can't offer much advice on the canvas-type camping, but it does seem that for 2 people to 'live' for a week with a little bit of comfort you need a 4 man tent!!

Anyhow - wherever and however you end up, and in whatever you end up, enjoy!!!!

Manufacturers will label their sleeping areas on "man" size which is approx 60cm (2ft), which is roughly the width of a capming mat but sadly not the width of a standard single air matress. It does not take into consideration  your kit and anything else you need to fit in. This is not so imortant with the larger tents as these have a separate living area but when you are urchasing say a 3 man dome , this will really only be comfortable for 2 men.

Hello Andy

My advice when starting out would be to book a couple of nights in a campsite close to where you live so you can get your equipment sorted.  It's amazing how many things you take and don't need or need and don't take in the beginning

There is only 2 of us but we have a four man tent so we can get all our kit in the sleeping area to store it. We have a large living area and seperate sleeping area but as you say how do they work it out, if your are 6ft plus and built like a beanpole then its how many of them can they get side by side like sardines that tells you how many can physicaly get in there. Bit like how many elephants in a mini!!

OMG Andy! You have so-o-o-o-o-o-o got your priorities wrong mate

Never mind how you get 6 'men'(well each to their own), in one teensy weeny bit of canvas.....you're main probs gonna be getting off this bl**dy site

You have stumbled in to the BEST forum in the w-h-o-l-e wide world, (and my apologies to the only other forum that use...and you KNOW who you are), and once you've done that first click.....you're scuppered pal!

Now, I do run a help group and you can find all about how to cope with this new addiction you've got, (and trust me.....it IS an addiction), if you go to the thread entitled 'New Arrivals Welcome' which will give you some pointers about how to manage a 'life' away from the keyboard and new strategies are being thought of allllllll the time too, so worth checking that thread out on a regular basis

Anyhoo, Andy,  to

55

and the thousands of new 'virtual' pals you're gonna make.

Btw....next ukcs-anon meeting coming soon to a pc near you.

My name's Hippy chick and I am.....a ukcs addict....THANK GOODNESS

Well if sleeping on top of people is your thing then stick to the manufactures quoted number of occupants and you should have some fun weekends, but make sure it is a four person tent and not a four man tent

But I must say I am a space freak and like lots of room to move about in a tent so I would totally disregard the manufactures quoted number of occupants and work on something like a five berth would be good for two adults and one child and a six berth would be ok for three adults this is the rule of thumb that I work to
