we took our little one to france and in the UK and it was fine .We have a 'little life' cotton sleeping type cot --its like a separate little tent that can go next to you it keeps them snug and has a zip over cover that has a built in mosquito net -it all collapses down into a flat bag .dont worry about needing lots of facilities -what do you need ?we bathed elizabeth in a washing up bowl with water heated off the stove - you can even get blow up portable baby baths ,disposable bottles etc .its great fun hope you enjoy yourself
Heat water before going to bed - stays warm enough for when the baby wakes up during the night; Or as someone else also suggested try to get baby onto room temperature milk ASAP; I used ready made cartons of baby milk - expensive but does save measuring milk out at 3am in the morning. I just heated it up using flask of hot water.
We used grobags with blankets and travel cot, blankets underneath etc.
make sure a bottle is ready for when they wake up in the morning - saves getting stressed when they are crying.
Otherwise enjoy - gets harder once they start crawling!
My daughter was five months old when we first took her, we go again on monday and KT now just two and my son are beside themselves with excitment. I think this is what makes the holiday special for us. We got out our TT this afternoon to start packing bits up and they loved it.
------------- Never look back if you want to move forward
Took my baby backpacking, very slowely, at 2 months!.... Managed 2 days......rucksack on back, baby on front. Cotswold way summer 1989! Yep it was crazy but it was also strangely fun.
we took our eldest camping to france when she was about 8 months old. at the time ther was foot & mouth so we could only take sealed cartons of milk into france. much, much easier if more expensive. also easier when out & about. all the fresh air meant that she slept much better too!
Girls are now 6 & 4 and have been camping at least twice a year since they were tiny, IMO best holiday there is for families, children love the freedom & parents get chance to relax! fantastic, roll on next trip!
Above all, enjoy it- just remember that mud washes off!
Well we did it! We camped this weekend and our son was 11wks (and almost 3yr old daughter). He was no problem at all. He was very snug at night, I think wearing a hat made a significant difference. He's breastfed so that was convenient.
It would have seemed odd to anyone watching but when getting him dressed in the morning I used to put his clothes under mine i.e. next to my body just to take the chill off them before putting them on him. Only potential problem was that we forgot to take the pack of nappies! Thankfully the changing bag was well stocked, an "emergency" nappy is always in the boot and he didn't have many dirty nappies so we just had enough.
------------- From tents to trailer tents to a tin tent to an air tent to trailer tent and back to tin tent!
Took our son at 6 months, but would have gone sooner, but he was a xmas baby, so too cold. He was bottle fed, but was sleeping through the night by then. We had him on a small blow up mattress that had sides, next to us and he was warm and snug, also meant we could deal with him quickly if he woke. We just washed him in the sink in the toilets........actually he is 4 now and doesnt like showers........so still gets a quick swish in the sink to freshen up.
He loves camping, but there again, he has grown up with it.
Can't remember how old ours were when we first took them camping - probably a few months. To be honest, it's not the age of the baby that concerned me, it's the noise they generate! I just remember being really conscious that even when they're happy and well fed, babies can quite happily 'talk' away to themselves for quite a while in the middle of the night, and we all know how easily noise travels from a tent. A gurgling/babbling baby may sound cute to its parents, but not necessarily to other people, especially at 3am.
We are trying our 1st proper (longer than a couple of nights) camping holiday soon with our little ones, though the youngest is now nearly 2 - my main fear is the noise generation and fact he can wake up quite early - well both of them do, post 6:30 is a luxury. Hopefully all the fresh air and running around will help them both to sleep longer, if not it will be lots of quiet games (not sure what) until the hour is more sociable!!!
We are camping with some friends that have a 9 month old and they are bringing along their steriliser - milton is great and I found it easier than the steam ones. Flasks of hot water too - very good for heating up baby puree when you are out and about - if you get one of those big food flasks you can normally fit the bottle or the jar/container of food in it so you don't need a bowl or anything else.
