We went to the C&CC north of Scarborough last weekend and had no trouble at all with our 20ftx10ft tent Indeed we've never had trouble at all on any site over the past 3 years we've had this tent. When i talked to one of the staff he said they had restrictions but you wouldn't be able to put big square type dome tents on most of there pitches as it would engross there rules of having tents or units to close to each other as the club is strict over this rule, so you would be limited to the pitches that were vacant Our tent being a rectangle tunnel tent would fit on any of there vacant pitches , and so we had more choice of the 300 pitches on there site He also said that it would be difficult ,at peak times to get a large square tent near a hook up point therefore limiting you even further. I have always had friendly advice from the friendly club and the staff bend over backwards to help anyone with problems

We have found a lot of sites that will accomodate our larger tent and still they conform to the fire regs.

Our experience is that many sites quote the 6m rule while others the 3m, I've done some research and came across this website that may help.

Our advice though is always advise the size of your tent before booking.

We are newbies, and have just bought a vango diablo 600. I excitedly tried to book some trips for the summer, and immediately had problems getting on some. We only got our tent a couple of weeks ago, and to be honest if I'd have realised this, we definitely would have bought a different one. Luckily one site which we especially wanted to visit, took pity on us, and said we could go during a quieter time.  I can already see us getting another smaller tent for less accomodating sites. Some sites I phoned said they would add an extra charge, which I suppose if one solution....... but it makes a cheap camping trip, not so cheap afterall.

Hi Gilcrew.
That license rule is very similar for all county's in England and wales I am not sure about Scotland.
The problem is some site owner misinterpret this rule to cram unassociated tents closer together. But some campers
accept this just to get on the site, but this is normally at site's you do not book in advance and were piches are not set out.If you book a pitch and pay a deposit you can insist if you want, for the owner to give you a pitch that conforms to the six meter ruling,if he as one?
All the best
Rex.

Hello Rex,

I was speaking to a site owner recently who had just gone through his inspection with the authorities. When I queried the distance ruling he explained that he had been informed that the 6m rule was when more than one tent was camping together as a group in close proximity. Should they have a fire, because of the additional tents and equipment in a smaller area the distance between other tents should be 6m rather 3m. I did some research and found the North Cornwall Council had posted what they considered was the rule (similar to his explanation).

Because of our larger tent we always book in advance, we do not require EHU and find the plots we are normally given are generous (with more than 3m seperation) and at no extra cost.

Many thanks, Gilcrew

Hello grumpylady.

We looked at the Diablo 600, before going for the Georgia (hard choice but the carpet swung it). The 600 is a fantastic tent. Though there are sites out there that don't accomodate our larger POD tents, many do, at no extra charge and without compromising their fire prevention obligations.

Try search on these message reviews, press the search tab and type in larger tents or large tents, many helpful info exists with some kind campers listing large tent friendly sites.

Good luck and keep positive, Gilcrew
