Does camping really give you freedom, i am new to camping and love the idea of just being able to jump in the car on a friday night and go off on our travels but it seems that in reality you have to book.
what about the freedom of getting up when you want without worrying about missing a hotel breakfast? the freedom of eating outdoors? ... at a time you choose.....the freedom of letting the kids run around and play?.......
I could go on (I usually do) but I would be late for work....basically camping gives you the freedom of doing what you want, when you want to.
.....and yes, it is adviseable to book even if it is only on the morning of your departure.

it depends on the site . i never book on one site as it states unless you need electric hook up .have a look on the camp site search and there web pages
Ditto the above Bank Holidays, special events, rallies, popular sites I book. For local weekend getaway new site book first time to get feel of the place then only book if busy site.
------------- Yesterday is already a dream and tomorrow is only a vision, but today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope.
If you want to be able to go off at short notice on friday night, keep it nice and simple equipment-wise, and keep all your stuff permanently in boxes/bags (eg one for cooking stuff, one for sleeping stuff etc). that way you can quickly chuck it in your car and you won't waste an hour hunting stuff down.
And if you want REAL freedom (and you don't mind roughing it) - wild camping's the only way!
The only time I booked when camping in a tent was during bank holiday periods. I usually decided which campsite I wanted to go to the day before, then just went. If you get there early (about midday) then you can normally rely on there being a space. I am able to go Friday morning though...might be more difficult on a Friday night.
I only once found that there were no pitches at my chosen site so I just drove around until I found another site which had one...and that was during a holiday weekend, hence the reason I started booking.

That's when you upset the wife, right?
The chance would be fine thing! I'm now chained to my family of five + huge tent + creature comforts. I'm longing for the time when we can all head up into the hills again - I reckon that'll be as soon as the kids are old enough to carry their own sleeping bags + mats. Since the youngest isn't even crawling yet, that may be a while off! Actually, my wife loves wild camping just as much as I do (if not more!) - we spent our honeymoon hiking and wild camping in the Pyrenees.
Booking is the easiest part of camping. You also have to be very organised. But once you become organised, it's straightforward.
Camping is extremely relaxing and, once you have the equipment, very cheap. I started camping last year and have so far been 4 times with my gf. We love it because it gives us the benefits of a holiday at a cheap cost. And, because camping means we're sleeping in a field we have the fresh air.

Hi Bob. We just phone the night before and ask how busy they are, Then if you really want that site you can then book. Regards. Rex
I do that now I have a caravan, Rex. Only because it would be a nuisance searching round for a site with a caravan in tow. I've also stopped going on Bank Holidays...just too busy even if you can get a pitch.
Some sites won't take bookings just for a weekend, even if you phone up the evening before...it's first come first served...which means getting there early if you can.
we dont quite rough it but i do like sitting outside the tent about 7.30 am kettle whistling on the stove reading the paper usually have about 5 cups of coffee before the wife and kids stir, then the rashers and bread come out
fresh air fresh coffee and bacon butties can't beat it

IT'S HEAVEN AND HELL!!!!!!
Before children arrived we only ever booked (or tried to) for a bank holiday weekend. We used to just turn up any other time. However we tended to go to the same sites so got to know what time of day to arrive etc.
As for freedom, its wonderful! To do whatever you want whenever you want to. Then the children come along
