We were planning a camping trip this weekend to Blair Athol. It will be the first time we've taken our youngest (15 months) camping and our first 'non-summer' trip since our eldest (3 1/2) was born. We were hoping to set off Saturday afternoon and come home Monday. Problem is the weather. Hubby thinks it's too cold at night for the wee ones. Has anyone had experience of cold wet trips with young kids? We've got a coleman galileo weathermaster so we should stay dry, but is it fair to expect the kids to be happy when it's only 4 degrees? Would we be better leaving for another weekend and accepting that it will probably be just a one night trip?
Yes - however I find taking layer clothes great, and and take away to suit weather. Also layers of bedding - those cheap fleecy cot blankets or car blankets are great. I've even used on inside a sleeping bag before now. One night last summer it was freezing when I went to bed, put it inside the sleeping bag, and when I was too warm in the middle of the night, simply moved it to the top. Don't forget that it's easier to adjust layers of bedding than layers of clothes. Providing the rain isn't too heavy - we've got walks and outing in, also grabbed walks in between showers. Just done waterproofs and wellies and let then splsh in the puddles.
We have children who are similar in age to yours, and we started camping in March this year. We were even out on a couple of frosty nights. We just wrap them up well - fleecy sleepsuits, an airbed, and a good quality sleeping bag. The littlest one wears gloves if her hands get cold.
They have always been fine. I'm considering buying some fleece sleeping bag liners or somethig to put between the airbed/floor or airbed/us to make us all extra toasty, but it isn't strictly necesssary
You can be as warm as you want, just remember to take layers. You need to have some insulation (foil backed picnic rugs) under airbeds then airbed, then a blanket, then good quality sleeping bag (with a fleecy inner if you want) You can also have a hot water bottle if needed and more blankets / duvet on top. If you use electricity take a small fan heater. Whenever you camp even in the middle of the hottest summer you can be cold at about 3am as long as you go prepared you'll be fine.

Pomm Netto are doing the fleece bag liners now also the foil backed foam mats for under the airbeds.
we camped with our little un last year in scotland and the temp had dropped then, we purchased a fleece all in one from an outdoor clothes shop for £12.99, they use them for under ski suits etc, and it also has feet in
something like this with feet in
then we take her sleeping bag and a duvet just in case its gets to cold, but she is always warm during the night and wakes up like a little radiator in the morning

A balanced life is a glass of wine in each hand :O)
Our two are 4 1/2 & 2 1/2 , they have foil backed mats under a ready bed with a sleeping bag inside of the ready bed and then a fleece blanket wrapped around the bed, & fleecey pj's, bed socks. They are always lovely & warm. We have bought a carpet for our new monty 6 so are going to use the redundant picnic rugs under the beds too. We like to be warm.
