We had our first trip away in our khyam xxl classic this weekend and had heavy rain all of sunday! We were a bit dissappointed to discover that several places leaked.
1. Top of window
2. Toggle just off the centre of the middle of the tent.(what is it there for anyway?)
3. About 4 places along various seams.
Anyone else had these problems with their khyam? Do i seal the seams with sealant or contact shop we bought from?
We used to have a royal avignon, and camped many times in extremely windy wet condition with no leaks at all.
i have to phone my mother in law today to see if i can pitch ours in her back garden to dry it out. It's still sitting in our vw dripping!
I didn't actually mind the weather, it's the best we've had camping so far!
Just annoyed that we will have to get the seam sealant out on a new tent.(hubby doesn't want to bother taking it back, he doesn't think it is bad enough to warrant that) If it had been a cheap and cheerful one i would have expected leaks.
A few seams leaked on our Khyam Tourer when we got it a couple years ago. I remember feeling the same way. On the one hand, it's a new tent - why should it be leaking, should we send it back? On the other, it's a minor problem that's probably easily fixable, is it worth the hassle?
It came with a tube of seam sealant (two, actually!) and instructions on how to use it - so that's what we did, and none of the seams have ever leaked again, so we're quite happy with that. But it's almost as if Khyam expect you to have a few leaks and to sort them out yourself. I don't know why - as you say, other manufacturers seem to be able to seal their seams before they sell you their tents.
We have pitched our brand new ultimate classic this weekend for the first time and had dripping from all of the inner hanging points. Not sure what to do about it? Not sure where to apply sealant as all the seams at these points are taped anyway.
Hi Tobys mum. I had a look at our khyam instruction booklet and there is mention of the areas with hanging points being more likely to 'wick' I think this may be a nice way of saying leak! I assume that the sealant is applied on the inside along the seam.
I am surprised at the amount of people who have had similar problems. Our first tent never leaked at all. And that was with far worse weather than this weekend. Perhaps we were just lucky!
I'm so glad I found this thread! I'v been Googling "tent waterproofing" for hours and felt compelled to join up to this site as you guys have solved my problem!
Bought our Ultimate Classic just in time for the weather to break last summer and it leaked somewhat during those downpours. My last outing, like the other masochists, was this last bank holiday - I thought perhaps it was sheer weight of rain but then thought a new tent shouldn't leak regardless. Luckily the sleeping compartments only got a bit damp!
Better get them sealing tubes out I guess. Haven't bothered to dig them out the bag yet - assumed they wouldn't be needed for years - anyone know if it's the outside you need to do? Need to get it done ASAP as it seems my destiny to only camp during the flooding season!
Not had a problem so far but only used it three times now - but you're right - it is larger than I thought! I think a lot of sites now allow for a caravan, an awning and a car which is about the same as our tent and a car. Ish!
