Hi all
Over the last couple of days I have emailed 10 camping site who charge extra for additional tents.
I explained we had been discussing this on the forum and did their charge include the small tents that people are now using to cook in for comfort and safety.
I am still waiting for my first reply,What I would recommend you do if funds are tight and you are going to use an additional tent for cooking check before you go as you may find you have another £35 to pay that you did not foresee

rang campsite yesterday, additional £2 a night because smaller than gazebo which they charge £3 a night for!
Hi f1ferrari
Well if they stick to that it is not bad but after all it is only used by tent campers like an horning is used on a caravan but safer it is not attached to the main unit,Still at £2 a night that is a three liter box of wine down the drain,

All the food, stove, fridge etc goes in there as well as chairs at night time.
Since we've had it we've not mentioned it to the sites, well not that I recall, we may have said something along the lines of having a kitchen extension to the tent.
Maybe its because we generally go at quieter times, but the site have never said anything about it once up. Now I've said that we'll get charged next time!
If the site charges extra for gazebos, pup tents or day tents I don`t bother to declare my kitchen tent because it`s none of the above. (I do go prepared to pay if asked.) If the tarrif says "auxiliary tents" then I stump up at registration. I`ve never had to pay more than £2 per night for my kitchen tent. Many site owners have remarked what a sensible idea a kitchen tent is.
It`s worth £2 per night to me to use my kitchen tent. It makes life more comfortable in the main tent, it`s safer for us not to be cooking in the main tent, it`s more comfortable to cook under a sheltered area. Less stress all round for less than the cost of a half bottle of wine!
I think it is a bit of a cheek for site owners to charge extra for a utility tent on a marked pitch, if you can get your tent utility tent and your car on the marked pitch then I feel that you should not be charged extra for additional tents
If you pay for a marked pitch and put a one man tent in the centre of the pitch and leave 90% of the pitch empty that is your choice if you pitch the biggest tent in the world on a marked pitch and use the whole pitch that is up to you, I don’t think it is fair to be charged extra for additional tents when you are not taking up any more room than your marked pitch
Fair comment, make sense. We're already paying for extra car too as we both have small cars so its gradually gettingmore expensive. Just went to try the 'utility' tent up in the garden and teh sky turned dark, grr, why is verything against me? lol
I went to Lobb Fields(N>Devon) last week. Me(solo),1 small dome tent and my Outhouse utility tent for cooking. The not so able assistant(the one who smirks and shrugs a lot) wanted to charge £9 anight for the dome plus another £9 a night for the utility tent. I explained what it was used for and that it would fit on the same pitch as my dome tent. Her reply was "the computer doesnt mention a cooking tent". I thought how fortunate it was that she had a computer - a brain whould have been frightening!!! This would have meant paying £36 a night during peak periods!! I did NOT stay there of course.
Shell Island is a fabulous site. The pitches are unmarked, you are charged per person per night and you can use as many tents/utilities as you like.
We went camping last year with 2 canvas frame tents (one to cook in) a ridge tent, my sisiters 2 man dome tent and a toilet tent. 3 adults and 4 children for the bargain price of £27 per night.. That was peak season too!
I think site owners are getting greedy where they want to charge for utility tents. You pay per pitch and should be able to utilise that pitch any way you see fit as long as it follows health and safety regs and a cooking tent is the safest way to go.
Boycotting greedy sites sounds like a good way to go to me.
most of the rallies we go to dont seam to mind about what tat and extras you have apart from they like to know how many are sleeping in and near the unit . and it costs from £6 pupn regardless of how many people are in the unit

Hi Deb
You are right there,I think I am correct in saying that the site licensing allows a group of six tents to be piched they must be 3meters apart but over six the 6 meter rule comes in.but on a fixed pitch as long as your
unit and vehicle fits and it is within the six meter rule
you should be able to pitch a utility tent.this could be a problem for very big tents but I beleve most sites state very big over 6x6squ meters.
regards.
