Have just read a thread about a footprint groundsheet and have seen footprints mentioned before.

I am a returning camper after many years and am not up to date with current tents and am just in the process of looking at various tents before I buy.  

I have decided I would like a SIG but wondered what these 'footprints' are? Can anyone explain groundsheets/footprints or point me in the direction of any info where I can read up on it.

A foot print groundsheet is a thing that you put down on the grass and pitch your tent on top of it

This is to protect your sig from getting dirty and damaged it should be designed to fit the footprint of you tent but some are a bit over footprint if you get one that is a bit oversize then tuck the excess back under the flysheet to stop water channeling under the tent   

A  Footprint Groundsheet is a PE groundsheet which is cut to the footprint shape of the tent. It keeps  the sewn-in groundsheet of your tent clean and helps to avoid the possibility of a puncture by placing this groundsheet under your tent on muddy or stony ground.

If you go to a builders merchant, you can get a piece of membrane in one piece cut to the size of you tent . It is very cheap and will last longer than the tent

We got a footprint for our diablo and I'm so glad we did as its much easier to dry out a footprint than the bottom of the tent!!

Bought a footprint for our Outwell Hartford XXL and really helped HOWEVER on packing up found a mouse had got between footprint and SIG and shredded a tissue aswell as weed & pooed !!  Thank god I didn't stand on it, it would have been bye bye tent, hello caravan.

Would really advise on the carpets, makes a huge difference.
