Well my suggestion with a puppy would be to buy a crate and crate train at home then it makes for a far easier camping trip and also with crate training you will find far less accidents at home.

yep get a crate we go whippet raceing with our dogs the old greyhound  are fine sleep the sleep on the air beds with us and aslong as the windbreaks up would never wander off. the younger ones would be a nightmare without there crates try and get the bigest one you have rooom to take so the pup has lots of room I make sure mine are in theres when I am cooking as a dog running about in a tent when  cookinbg is just not safe. the screw hooks are goos when your at about with the pup in an evening so he can have some freedum and  cubbles. make sure he has lots of nice walks and runs and he will be happy to curel up in his creat and sleep in peace and quiet. ours have covers  mover them  whitch gets the dogs gto settle better as winging pups dont go down well. Introduce the pup to the crate well in advance and make it his specile place feed him  in there mnake it realy comffy with his tonys in and leave the door open for him to go in and out as he please and he will be fine when away in it.

  we take 9 dogs with us with no probvlems at all he will love it and all ways make sure you put some poo bags in every coat and kjacket pocket you have  just incase

We have just had a few days away with our 9 month Springer Spaniel. This was the second time he has been camping and i can say he enjoys it just as much as we do.  He loves the attention from other fellow campers and has settled into camping life very well.

I think if you have a crate or small travel kennel and take him regularly to the excercise field you shouldnt have any problems.

I have to agree with Colin, We've just been away for the second time with our 10 month old springer. He loves it but is a bit keen to get out of the tent and play with the rabbits! We mainly keep him on his lead on a corkscrew stake if outside the tent or either tethered to a (occupied) chair leg inside or in his dog-bag fabric crate. Exercise is key - wear him out so when you stop so does he!

We also use a "training lead" which has a clip each end and a couple of rings so that you can shorten/lengthen the lead easily to keep him on a short reign if needed.

Also hide chews or similar are good for keeping ours occupied.

Our mongrel, Freddie, about 3 years old, has a similar setup to hlk01 so he doesn't get tangled in the guys. The only problem we have is that he will lay down and play dead - you end up with a load of people gathered around him saying "Was that your dog? How sad he's dead". As he is a highly trained attack dog this is his cunning plan to lure victims in before going for the throat (if only). He does it for the attention 'cos he's sad.

As long as your puppy is well behaved and you clean up after him you should not have any problems. We have a SIG so Freddie cannot escape otherwise he would be on a long lead all the time.

We took our 1 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier camping for the first time last weekend. We used the corkscrew thing with a long line (horse lunge from ebay £4) tied her up and gave her something to chew whilst we put the tent up.

We have 3 bedrooms in our tent so kids had one, we had the other and Bindi(dog) had the other.  She is always crated at night at home so being crated in the tent didn't feel any different for her.  We put lots of torn up newspaper in the bottom of the crate to help keep her warm and a big fleece blanket.  Our tent has a SIG so no problems with her escaping when it was raining. But saying that she didn't even try to escape out the front door when it was open she was quite happy sitting at the door watching the world go by. I was quite worried about taking her camping, thinking she would cry all night and keep everyone awake but she was an absolute angel and will definitely be taking her again.

The site we stayed on is surrounded by woods so we could give her a good run off lead, I think having lots of exercise to wear them out is a good idea too.

The only problem I encountered was....you know when you wake up absolutely bursting for the loo, well Bindi always heard me getting up and was also bursting for the loo so I always had to quickly let her out for a wee first so she was quiet and didn't wake the whole campsite then run like the clappers to the toilets before I had an accident!!!
