I had a look at this and I don't think it looks safe .If you look at the description it would have you think otherwise.

so if you seasoned campers could tell me wether I'm right or wrong it would be much appreciated because im just putting the finishing touches to my gear for our 1st camping trip

Thanks

Why do so many people come on here asking if Ebay, homemade, illegal (probably) EHUs are safe? They think that they can save 30 quid but will end up electocuting themselves and setting the tent on fire!

it's better to spend a lot on a quality hookup rather than a cheap version. You'll find it's always an electrician who wants to cut a few corners to make an easy pound or two. avoid ebay for the likes of hook ups.

Our EHU is homemade by OH and this thread got me thinking so I've just phoned him to ask is it safe.

He says yes and has told me its "2.5mm Arctic cable" so it stay flexible and easy to use without kinking it. It goes into a "MK Outdoor Double RCD Protected Socket" so everything is protected, or so he says. He's been "in the trade" for more years than we care to think about.

What do you think?

Should I buy a Proper one?

I wouldnt argue with OH if I were you....lol...It sounds fine to me...but there again I am about to construct one exactly the same.

They are better than those you buy as they are IP66 rated if itsd the same as mine

Yes, even when you plug into the socket, the cover still seals it off so no water can get in to it.

And as I understand it, those RCD things stop you from getting electricuted.

I guess they are the same sort of thing as we have at home as all our house sockets are protected according to OH.

Absolutely right....But I am not knocking those you can buy....If you do not have the capablility to build your own then you should not even attempt it...electricity is very unforgiving...ALWAYS remember you cant see or smell electricity and when you can feel it its too late

Probably because they are not qualified electricians.

Campinggirl,  don't be too hard on them - surely if you don't know,  then it is better to ask especially important where electricity is involved?

New to all this but bought mine from the website www.tag-leisure.co.uk .  The company also sells on ebay too so if you bid right you can get the EHU at a great price and it's reputable too.  Now I need to find the perfect campsite!
