Hi everyone,

Just got back from a confusing weekend away, we nipped an hour up the road to a site in the Lakes. Not having camped in the Lakes before I thought it might be nice like most sites but with with better views etc. The site was stunning but the campers next to us were what I would call "rough" I'm not a snob, I was would say I'm your average hard working guy. They were drinking and talking loudly until 3.30a.m and then started drinking again at 11.00a.m same morning. Their kids were going around the back of our tent for no reason and at about 2.00 a.m someone tried to unzip the front door. Some people were polite but most were just rude and couldnt be bothered to even say hello when passing. They wernt the only ones either, an 8 or 9 year old girl landing at our tent wanting to play with our kids, after an hour we still had no sign of her parents, she told us she was from a tent further down the site! She wound our kids up torturing their teddies so I told her to go. The weather was brilliant, the site was good - why so many miserable rude people? and is camping becoming more popular for dodgy people? or am I living in a dream world and this is just normal? Is it that the Lakes attracts so many people from different walks of life and it backfires a bit? - Thats another point - people further up from us lighting fires under the NO FIRES sign with sparks flying near other tents or is a fire in a bucket, not a fire ?

Thought about going to the site owners but I did want the dodgy family then burning my tent down while we slept.

Felt a bit deflated and confused really, we had a great time camping at York last week - loads of nice chatty people, we had beers with other families and swapped numbers etc to meet up again!

We go camping to have fun and meet other like minded people - we have 3 kids so its not a rest. Not to be rude and upset others.

I've been on a few campsites with campers like these. I just made friends with the 'proper campers' and we all had a great laugh! In the end, the 'rough' campers got jealous, calmed down, joined in with us and admitted that it's the best weekend they've ever had!!

Hopefully they learnt how to camp properly!!

Hi ...myself and nobby  (another ukcs member )went to a site in wales last Aug bank hol with our families..we tuned up early 9.30ish to find at the back of our pitch was the family from hell ...5 kids 1 mother no male figure visible...we hopped out of the cars to asses the pitches we were given only to hear the most foul language bieng hurled at the kids from the mother..and i meen foul (My job involves me spending time on building sites) so i know foul language ,but even this id be very very hard pushed to hear the volume and amount of  verbal abuse that came from this womens mouth at the top of her voice ..and obvioulsy the kids led from her bad example ....we shoved our kids out of earshot in my car to watch a DVD  and started to pitch ...thankfully this family packed up and went home as we were pitching .......

we carried on to have a great weekend and met some realy freindly people ...

camping is a great pass time but unfortunatly people are all different...and some as always have no consideration for others....

id say in all the sites ive stopped at this kind of behavior is not common...but when it happens it ruins decent peoples time away ...

    Happy camping

All sorts of sites, for all sorts of campers.  As you visit more sites you will find the ones you like. Ask on here ask other campers for recommendations this is best.  Put this one down to expirence if the site wardens were in control then fires and distrubing the site at 3 00am would have been dealt with.

Thanks for that Oldham, Its not just me then. In future I will post on here for decent family sites before we go. I'm a builder Outward and I dont use that language on site let alone in front of my kids. No hope for the kids then, lets just hope they hated camping and wont go again.

What I should have added is that Bank holidays bring out the (Got the tent a couple of years ago but never use it campers )  August is worst.   So for August meet up with a few off here or there and be in good company.

Actually two of the dodgy kids said something really strange to us at about 10p.m. Our kids 3,5 and 7 were in bed shattered an we were sat out drinking wine, one of these kids pulled on our wind break and said "whats anticipation mean" grinning his head off! Bare in mind I had not slept well night before and someone pulled the zip down on our tent! So after half an hour of trying to reasure the wife it meant nothing, I got the rounders bat out of the car, wife went to bed and I sat up until it went it went quiet. Not good when your trying to wind down at the end of the day

Unfortunately, with the media portraying that 'Camping is the new black' people who are genuinely interested in the outdoor experience (new and old) are having to deal with 'campers' who don't know the first thing about camping etiquette and are unwilling to learn.

In defence of 'the lakes' it is by no means typical of 'us' to behave like that! Generally we are a very friendly polite bunch, and I hope your experience hasn't put you off from trying again

We were in the lakes last week and pitched close to 2 guys (they weren't there when we selected our spot) who turned out to be a real pain. First night they went to a local pub till late, then stayed up talking loudly (every other word seemed to be f**k) until after 1pm. The following afternoon they played their car stereo loud even though the car was 30m+ from their tent. That night they played car stereo till 10ish before going  to pub. I was woken at 5am by their loud talking. Turns out that they got back at 3:45am (drink driving!) and woke most others around us. Other people complained to them but it did no good.

The site wardens came round at 9am next morning asking if we had had problems (I guess someone had complained) and everyone nearby pitched in about how bad they'd been.

Then they woke them up (HA!) and kicked them off site. Full marks to the wardens. Peace for rest of stay!!

Sandy and the girls, its wasnt the locals that were rude far from it, it was the campers just where they come from I dont know!

What I do know is the kids rounders bat is always coming away with us in future
