Hi all, I'm a newbie to this site and camping really.

I want to buy a bigger tent but don't fully understand about ground sheets.

I have a vango aurura 800dlx 2006 which has a fully sewn in ground sheet, which is great and something i would want in a new tent. But the living area is too small when its raining.

I am looking at buying a 2006 vango colorado 800 or 1200dlx which i understand to have a bath tub ground sheet. Could someone please explain how these fit and are they any good?I want a tent that will keep the cold out in the uk and the bugs out in France .

I know that the 2007 tent all have sewn in ground sheets but my budget will not go that far.

Bath tub is another term for the same thing, sewn-in, SIG. etc, all mean that the groundsheet is attached to the tent walls, and usually the waterproof material extends up the walls a few inches, so making a "bath tub"

Get a piece of PVC sheet from the camp shop and make yourself an under-sheet / footprint / stone-sheet whatever you want to call it. It will certainly stop your tent groundsheet getting muddy and damaged from small stones etc. Also makes packing a wet tent away a better proposition, as you can pack the under-sheet seperate to the tent and keep the mud and grass away from the inner tent.

Bathtub is not entirely the same as a SIG in that it is not permanently attached to the tent (flysheet). The tent and the groundsheet are separate but the groundsheet has raised edges (bathtub) which attach to the tent at frequent intervals. This design is not as "airtight" as a SIG but should be sufficient to stop draughts. The benefit being that you the groundsheet is separate and can be cleaned independantly from the main tent and thisdesign offers a little more ventilation than a SIG.
