I have checked 4 different weather reports for this weekend.

1 says bright sunshine

2 say cloudy with sunny intervals

and the other says its gona pee down.

can anyone recommend a report that is roughly accurate or is that wishful thinking.

think i will trust the majority

If we had gone by last weeks weather forecasts on the internet we would have cancelled our holiday but I rang the site on the day we were due to leave and she said the weather was fine. We had 5 days of lovely weather with rain only once when the forecasts gave heavy rain every day with thunder storms on a couple of days. Just ignore them and go camping.

We were at Exe valley at the weekend, I checked the forecast on Weds, showers on Sat, heavy rain Sat night, Sunday showers and cloud. Looked on Thurs and it had changed, to overcast on Sat and cloudy Sat night with rain on Sun. Well we had a lovely dry weekend, not a drop of rain, warm sunshine on Sat and overcast but dry on Sun. So much for the tecnology, go camping and let nature do its thing.

Not sure I trust any weather report now, cos we were camping on the now legendary bank holiday and though we had been booked for a few weeks I still checked the weather for the specific area and it said to expect light rain ,dread to think what would have been the consequence of heavy persistent rain and strong winds!! We went anyway and we got the latter!! Never put us of though, so just be prepared like the good ol boy scouts and guides say. lol and you won't go far wrong!! Excellent test for the tent ,though if you have a tin tent doesn't really matter, though rain don't sound as sweet!!

I use weather.co.uk It's normally about right. It has an hour-by-hour report so you can decide when to arrive on site.

I try and avoid the mainstream/general forecasts such as via the BBC and choose specialist/local services such as:

http://www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/HOME/   (up to 2 weeks in advance)

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/uk_forecast_weather.html

via: http://www.countrywalking.co.uk/nav?page=countrywalking.contentspage&view_resource=5912925

Remember to look where the nearest weather station is that the forecast is based on (my 'local' one via the BEEB is over 14 miles away...!!!).

For the mountainous National Parks, try the Mountain Weather Information Service: http://www.mwis.org.uk/ which covers:

  • North West Highlands
  • West Highlands
  • Cairngorms National Park and Monadhliah
  • The Southeastern Highlands
  • The Southern Uplands of Scotland
  • The Cumbrian Fells
  • The Peak District National Park
  • The Snowdonia National Park

I also agree with Carl at atompl.co.uk that http://uk.weather.com/ is pretty accurate.

If there is a great difference in the reports between websites then the only thing you can be sure of is that nobody knows!!

The forecasts for last weekend changed every day. If the weather is so changeable then it can be raining in one valley and not in the next. We sat on the beach in glorious sunshine last week in south Devon and watched dark rain clouds whizz by on either side for several hours ... then one came straight across and got us!! No forecast could have predicted who got wet when.

Just go prepared for anything - whatever you get probably won't last for long anyway!
