Has anyone tried to work out how many people in the UK camp. Or know of any stats available?

Starter for 10.

We're of to Trevornick for the hols. They have 500 pitches x 6 weeks holidays, thats 3,000 weekly pitches available, x avarage family of 2.4, thats 7,200 campers. And, that doesn't include their overflow field (the one we'll be in) which must account for a further 1,000 weekly campers, that's the poulation of a small market town.

It was something that I'd always wanted to do - but was brought up with the idea that nice girls didn't go camping on their own.    My younger life was influenced by older relatives with very Victorian/Edwardian view about what was lady like, and how young ladies should behave.
When my in laws died and we no longer had the use of their static, we were stuck with the prospect of hiring cottages/vans during school holidays.     Then I looked around local camp shop, and at the package deals.     Persuaded Richard that not only would it be a lot cheaper than hiring as we were now limited to school holidays, but would also mean that we could get the odd week end away as we had in the van.
He was reluctant at first, but agreed - and loved the first weekend away, and the kids took to it like a duck to water.
What surprised me was the variety of people on a campsite.    Those with huge vans, to those with tiny tents - and from all walks of life.   99.9% of them willing to help their fellow campers, and always ready with a cheery hello.

If you are talking about regular campers, say at least once a year, I'd say it will still be millions.  Out of 20 people in my department there are 3 caravaners, one MH and 5 who camp regularly in tents.  When you look at the number of campsites there are, and realise they are often full or close to capacity at holiday weekends, the number is huge.

From The Times on line

"Camping is cool again," says Patricia Yates, spokesperson for Visit Britain. "The rise in festivals has meant that a lot more young people are buying tents, while the fact that campsites are now safer, have more amenities and the general advent of 'comfy camping' has meant that thousands more people are choosing a camping holiday. This is particularly noticeable in statistics relating to women."

The figures back up Yates's view: in 2003, 4.1 million people spent a night camping in the UK, 1.5 million of whom were female. In the last statistics from 2005, 4.9 million people spent the night in a tent or a caravan, with the number of women rising to 2.2 million. The statistics for 2006 will be coming out in July and are set to show an even larger rise. Interestingly, this is most noticeable in people camping in the UK rather than abroad, according to a Mintel Survey. Whether influenced by the impact of global warming on our summer weather, anxiety about flying abroad and our carbon footprints or the boom in music festivals, we Brits are packing up our troubles in our kit bags and setting up camp.

Whatever sort of camping you opt for, many find that there is nothing better than waking up in the fresh air, brewing up that first cup of tea on the stove, and contemplating the view. One word of advice however: advance bookings for the British Camping and Caravanning Club are up by 34 per cent this year so turning up unannounced is becoming riskier. If like our happy campers featured here, the appeal of the British sun, not having too many carbon emissions to offset and being close to nature tempts you to dust off your tent, it would probably be best to reserve your spot.

I thought I read somewhere, that nearly every night there are at least 20,000 people spending the night under canvas

I could be wrong though. I pick up bits of info from all over the place and can never remember where I've read it (or if I've dreamt it!)

Would be difficult I imagine to find out the exact number but I think that in recent years you hear of more and more people who are dedicated campers. I meet lots of people in my job and it never fails to amaze me how many of them enjoy camping. It's always a pleasure to swop stories and recommendations 'cos we're a great friendly bunch aren't we ?

I had never camped until 3 years ago when OH suggested it and we have never looked back. Absolutely love it and wish we could go every weekend

Apparently it's the new big obession of the nation  and what a great obession to have !

We have a Manc the family - but don't let people know   Sister's other half in from Manchester, and supports United.
