Hi Everyone,

Well we finally bit the bullet and bought a new Vango Breckenridge 600 from Raglan Camp & Kite Centre. Very happy with the tent and the service, and practice pitching it at Bryn Bach Park on the weekend (while dodging downpours) only took an hour - so overall well chuffed!

Now we come to start looking for suitable cooking equipment, and need further advice. We almost bought a coleman two-ring cooker on the weekend from Yeomans for under £30 (which we thought was reasonable), until we realised the gas and regulator/pipe etc that was not included would cost more than the cooker! Is £50 an average price for gas? We also noticed a more expensive cooker but which ran on unleaded, which we thought would work out cheaper in the long-run.

Any advice on the whole world of camping cooking?

you can often pick up gas bottles at the local tip or of ebay cheap, you then just take them to get a refill. We got a couple of tatty camping gaz 907 bottles from a car boot afew years back, took them to get them filled and got brand new bottles in return, felt great.

Hi Rich-T,

Were in the same boat. went camping with family last month. Liked it so purchased a tent (Gelert Lokon Vario 6 with Sun canopy). We are purchasing the rest of our stuff this week and WAS planning to go on our first sole trip this weekend.

After looking at the various cooking options we've decided to got for

3x Gelert Bistro Stoves http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/redirect.asp?redir=http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/503915207000  I like the fact that they pack up small and don't require a big bottle of Gas.

1x Gelert 4 Slice Folding Toaster http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/redirect.asp?redir=http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/5032307002826

1x Hubcap Griddle http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/redirect.asp?redir=http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/camping/cooking/5039150203998

and a "Camp Kitchen" table http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/redirect.asp?redir=http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/camping/furniture/5039150201512 to put them on.

I belive the Gas cans are now around £3 for four in Asda.

I can highly recommend the Coleman Dual Fuel system, we have a dual burner and a single burner. The cost very little run , you don't have to lug gas bottles around and you can buy unleaded fuel wherever you go.

The heat given out by them is incredible, they are great to cook on and the build quality is second to none.

They take a bit of getting used to as you have to pump the tank before starting and a little bit afterwards but once you've got used to it they are fab.

I have just ordered one of these. We do have a 2 ring cooker but were missing our toast in the mornings. Sorry to say this Widewolf but we then bought a folding toaster just like yours, used it once and it was rubbish (or was it just me??) so went in the bin.

yes but they do require lots of butane canisters, and you will end up with lots of half canisters as they lose pressure half way down and seem to take ages to boil the kettle, we have one and only use it for picnics/days out. big tip is make sure you use thin camping pans with them, anything thicker with half a canister and you'll be there all day.

Hi Rich
Have you thought of going camping with electric hook up as this gives you a lot more options for cooking etc. If you go electric then the Bravoska cooker is a very good buy as you can use it like a frying pan or as an oven which really opens up your choices of things to cook. We also take a toaster, kettle, sandwich toaster, rice cooker etc all run from the electric although not at the same time.
Like i said electric gives you alot more options.

we use a royal tripple burner 30 quid i think and 4.5kg butane will usually last 3to 4 weeks of teas coffee/breakfasts everyday and an evening meal all in one pot cassarole type thing refills around 10/11 pound

try your local freecycle site for an empty cylinder

We bought one of those folding toasters too ..............................................
what a strange experience that was!!

Not so much toast but singed bread!

Does anyone know of a stove that you can cook on rings and have a grill underneath that you can use all at the same time?

We have 2 of these, which we've had about 4/5 years  and cook everything on when camping. We haven't really had a problem with the canisters unless we have bought really cheap ones. There is another thread on it here:

 thttp://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=6&TopicID=112659&PagePosition=7

We haven't had a problem with the majority of canisters. It normally takes 8-10 minutes to boil a kettle for 4 cups of tea so while it's not as speedy as an electric kettle, it doesn't take forever either. They are much more convenient than lugging a gas bottle around.

The hubcap is a great piece of kit and we use it all the time but I have to agree with other people about the toaster, it kind of drys bread slowly rather than toasts it.

We have a Sunngas Grillmaster double burner and grill - it's excellent - you can use the grill at the same time as both rings - only downside is that it doesn't come with the regulator and bottle.

Heres a link
