Hi  I have been advised that Thompsons Brick Sealer is a good cheap substitute for the fabsil canvas waterproofer and I have a few queries that somebody may be able to help me with.

•  IS Thompsons Brick sealer actually a good substitute ?
•  If it is, would any other brand of brick sealant be just as good ?
•  How should I apply brick sealant to a canvas, obviously I would try a test piece first but should I brush it on or sprayit on?

I would be most grateful for some of your thoughts on this. We have used our old Marechel for about four camping trips and have never had a problem, the tent is perfect for our requirements and we can't afford another one yet, but with this years weather we thought pherhaps we should do some preventative maintenance before we have any problems.

Thonpsons water seal is a good substitute, I used it last year to re-waterproof my canvas tent only because I had some spots that were 'soaking through'. It apparently has a slightly waxy feel to it compared with fabsil but having never used that I couldn't comment, i will say however that I didn't notice any difference in the feel of the fabric post treatment.

To treat I used one of those weedkiller oump up spray things which did the job well as long as you do it on a calm day, once i spray one section of canvas from seam to seam I then used one of those 'swiffer' floor jobbies and attached a jay cloth to it then run that over the area i just sprayed to ease the water seal into the weave. Be careful when you do it not to concentrate the spray in one area or it will leave a noticeable patch.

As far as using another brick sealer i would definately say no way unless it specifically says on the tin that it can treat canvas which water seal does. Allow approx one 5 litre tin to do an average size frame tent which is how much i used on the tent in my gallery.

and there is nowt wrong with using thompsons even says do on the tin but beaware it stinks for days after.
