I remember the first family sized domes coming on the market in the 1990s - and now 10 years later the tents are getting bigger and bigger, especially the dome ones with bedroom pods off at all angles. Campsites are businesses and if the accommodation of bigger tents does not make business sense then it won't happen.

I do not want to sound unhelpful or unsympatheitc, but I dont think that sites will make bigger pitches available without substantially increasing the fees, and if they do that then those of us with smaller units may become the ones who are then penalised by increased costs.

The issue of pitch size should be considered when buying a tent, and (as the pinned thread on here shows) there ARE sites that take the larger tents. You just need to be aware that in choosing that kind of tent you are maybe limiting your choices of places to camp as not all sites can accommodate you.

Sites will be reluctant to change, if they don't feel a business need to do so. I suppose that change would only happen if there was a lot of large tents being turned away and affecting the business. I don't imagine that this would be the case though.

I think that at the moment campsites just haven't caught up with the increase in tent sizes.  It would cost them a lot of money to redesign their site over night e.g.resiting all their EHUs etc.

At the end of the day though, there are a growing number of people with larger tents and, like any other industry, if the is a market for it someone will spot the opportunity to make money from it.   I think we will see an increase in sites offering at least some larger pitches to answer that need as sites refurbish and as new sites open.   My guess is that there will be a choice of pitch sizes in the future just as we have a choice of ehu or non ehu at the moment.

Lets hope so, it is a shame to be turned away sa your tent is a slightly awkward shape and doesn't quite conform to the norm.

Maybe sites should have 2 different size pitches - ordinary and large and charge more for the large pitch but not as much as double the cost of an ordinary pitch. This would then allow the very large tents but also if people just want more space they can have it.

Well done !!

Did you get asked about the size of your tent? if so I assume that the Aspen 500 fits into their C&CC pitch size.

vango aspen 500

Footprint 6.05m x 3.7m - about the same length as a medium caravan but smaller in width than a caravan and awning. This will easily fit on a standard C&CC pitch.
