Hi, just preping for our first proper camping trip.

We went camping a couple of years ago for a short weekend in a small two man tent. We took two old bikes that we had at the time, and locked them to a fence next to the tent when we went out during the day and at night.

Our bikes are now better bikes and at night I could lock them to the roof rack on the car, but during the day if we go out in the car what can we do with them if there isn't a convienient fence to lock them to?

What do others do when they take their bikes with them camping with regards to security?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi when we take the bikes we just paddlock them altogether usually behind the tent. We've had no problems apart from RUST!

Depends what site you're at - some wardens may be happy for you to leave them behind the office or somewhere similar - worth asking.

This is what I do too, but our bikes only cost £150 -£200.  It would be really useful if more campsites offered proper facilities for parking bikes, particularly as some people combine camping and cycling holidays.

Lock them together and to whatever you have that's solid'ish - our favourite is the gas bottle and a saucepan!   Someone could lift all of it but it won't be easy or quiet!

We always lock ours to each other, preferably on either side of a tree or fence post.

We do the same, Christine. Pity the solo cyclist!

If there's no fence or tree, there's usually something solid around the site altho' not always near your pitch. If it's a staffed campsite, leaving the bikes locked together in view of the office or whatever, and mentioning this to the warden, would be better than nothing.

Also we're considering an idea from another cyclist who has one of those alarms for luggage etc that shrieks when it's moved. If that was attached to the locks or something that would move if the bikes were moved, but wouldn't move in the wind, it could be useful. Have yet to research this idea properly. Of course, it's only any use when there are people around to notice this, but I think the alarm is deafeningly loud so that might be a deterrent in itself.

Anyone come across something like this?

I bought a Dahon folding bike so that it can stay in the car all the time and do not have to worry about chaining it up 17

It is a very well spec'ed bike and cost a small fortune, hence it lives in the car.

Unfortunatly it does happen.May this year somebody had their Bike's stolen from Whitemead(Forest of Dean) see reviews, and they where locked to a Fence. Also read on here about somebody had theirs stolen off the cycle rack on their Car  in the middle of the night and the thieves used bolt cutters. Nobody heard a thing.
