When it gets really cold, butane can stay dormant in the bottle, but propane will carry on at lower temperatures. You need to make sure that your stove can accomodate both gases & not just butane. If it will do both, it's up to you. The only downside I can think of, is that propane is a bit more of a dirty gas, which can soot up burner jets, & leave the bottom of your pans black. You used to have to change burner jets as far as I can remember as well, as your stove will be set up for butane. The other thing is that, a small campsite will usually stock more butane than propane, so no hassle if you run out. Butane will keep running, unless it's total brass monkeys " tent stiff with ice etc " even then you can insulate the bottle, if you know what I mean.
