It may be the light that is waking him, and putting some dark fabric over part of the pod he is in will help with that, but your response of picking him up and going for a wee walk will have created that expectation for him now.... which is why he was more likely to wake and stand up waiting for you again- in effect your response "rewarded" his behaviour, so he will be likely to repeat it.
So you also need to think about how you respond to his early waking - if you make it as dull and uninteresting as possible it will not give an incentive for him to repeat the behaviour.
