Hello,

Going on first camping trip with another family next weekend and was wondering if anyone had any advice regarding camping with others.  For example what do people do regarding proximity of tents to each other.  Obviously it would be nice to be side by side but would it be just too close at night when you'd literally be able to hear every noise they make eg snoring?

Any other do's and don't re camping with others much appreciated!

Alan

We tend to go with two other families and always try to get pitches next to each other as its so much easy, that way its not too far to carry the beer/wine

Hi Alan
It all depends were you are going,If the site as laid out pitches you will have no problem but even if your site allows you to pitch anyway you like ,you can always say to your friends that the law says you must pitch 6 meters apart.or you can go closer and whisper to their tent to put a peg on the offending nose.

We have the occasional trip with my brother and his family, we always pitch next to each other and put our day tent in between and gather there of an evening for drinks and chat

When we've done this with friends or with my extended family we have a pretty basic 'rule' that we do our own thing during the day and meet up on one pitch or other in the evening. Of course, if you end up wanting to do the same thing during the day you might end up seeing more of one another, but I find it's good to have the personal space to get away a bit!

Tent or caravan pitching diatance sort of depends on the site, but a sensible distance apart is wise - you don't have to feel like you're on top of one another.

We have been away several times with friends.   We tend to pitch so that our 'side doors' are facing each other and then we bbq and sit in between. We are not into putting up windbreaks etc. though as we hate that 'getto' image that some groups seem to project.

When we were first thinking of going on a French camping trip with ready set up tents the owner recommended having pitches diagonally opposite - close enough he said to see and hear the kids, but far enough away that your close friends aren't privy to every conversation.

We have been camping with friends twice now. The first time we were on totally separate sites and I thought a bit of a disaster. This last time we were side by side porches facing , and although the weather was abysmal and each of us experienced one mini disaster after another, having friends to share  the experience with made it a laugh.

We go camping with four other families and always have a great time, we pitch next to each other, we all chip in with meals etc and generally stick together, the kids find it brilliant and it also helps them to learn about helping each other, respecting each others space and really brings out the best in them.

I would really recommend camping with other families.

I always camp with freinds we also pitch next to each other. last year we could get three pitches next to each other but we had two very big pitches and put the third small er tent in the middle. and then parked the cars on the empty pitch. worked well the site owner was most helpful. But made our break a lot more fun.

I have been camping with friends for years.  As single people, couples and now as families.  I always find, if we are going for a night or two then being side by side, or porches facing each other is always better.  We always discuss what we are doing for food before we go.  We very often do one meal together and then just do our own thing.  As for the day time, again if it's for a couple of days, then stick together any longer do your own thing during the day.  But always remember to discuss the plans before you go, to stop any bitter feelings.
