I'm all for getting the tent you want and finding the sites to accomodate.  Our 'funny shaped monster' as I'm fondly starting to think of it takes up the best part of 8m x 8m and we've never had any problems camping where we want to, and we do always check first.  For a large family a fsm that meets your needs can make the experience more enjoyable.

What happened to camping being about heading out to them wide open spaces??  May as well stay cooped up in suburbia in our well regulated plot sizes!!

I was thinking of join the C&CC but think i might think again as my tent is 7.5m x 4.5m.

Think they need to look at pitch sizes again because there are alot of larger tents out there now

Am I right in thinking that a 'pitch' basically means everything you have including the car and anything outside the tent like chairs in front, tarp?

Hi Samcat. No I don't think is correct. My understanding of C&CC site rules is that they apply the 6m rule between pitches and that your car can be parked in that space, but must be at least 3m from neighbouring tents.

Hi CJ ... Which is less than 9m x 5m ?? so you shouldn't have a problem

Thanks for clearing that up :-)

Reading the other posts it sounds as though most sites are fine with a 'borderline' tent size & that its best to ring and check.

This is one of the reasons that I sold my Vango Diablo 900 a couple of years ago - they have too big and irregular a footprint for many sites (incl C&CC) to accomodate easily.

We now use an Outwell Vermont XL as we still like plenty of space, but it sneaks in below the C&CC limits to avoid hassle in booking:

It's much easier when you have a nice caravan shaped rectangular footprint.

btw I am fairly sure that the guy lines are not included if the C&CC jobsworth starts measuring his 6m to the mm.

you are right. guylines are not included in the 6m rule according to c&cc site policies.
