this may be a question that im too embarressed to ask down at the shop, but what does it mean when tents boots socks and alsorts of camping gear are 2 season, 3 season, 4 season etc.
Hi Tom. I see you're from my neck of the woods! The season ratings put on camping gear such as sleeping bags apply to the time of year they are best used, for instance a 4 season sleeping bag would see you warm all year round but a 3 season bag would only be used during Spring, Summer and Autumn etc
but is now often either accompanied by, or replaced by a 'temperature range'. This can be more confusing as they often quote an 'extreme temperature' figure (literally that at which you won't die of cold at!) and a 'comfort temperature' figure - where you are supposed to be comfortable (sometimes a range, sometimes just one temperature!).
Anyhow, having confused you further, it depends on you as well. For example the sleeping bag that I now use is a '3 season', even though I only camp in Spring and Summer 'cos I feel the cold. The kids seem to roast themselves in '2 season' bags though, even on a nippy April night!
