well, personally, I picked my site weeks ago and I don't think anyone anticipated such extreme weather and muddy conditions in July....in autumal months, then yes, it goes without saying to pick sites carefully.
This is the tenuous point...it isn't really anybodys fault....it's not really the site owners fault - although I still think they have some duty and responsiblity to state fairly and honestly what the state of their ground is, so people can make an informed choice about whether to go ahead or not...and it's not the campers fault either....like I say, I chose my site weeks ago and there was no reason at all for me to be concerned that it might turn into a mud bath in July !
Put it like this genie i would never book in advance unless its a uk meet, I certainly wouldn't book a riverside site in advance, maybe thats down to camping experiance or the fact i've lived most of my life close to the river thames and know just how unpredictable rivers can be
We were away last weekend, and were unlucky with the first pitch we had - it wasn't bad when we set up, but then the rain started again, and on Sunday morning we ended up with a lake in our tent - dried out, and then the rain started again and the lake reappeared. People next to us left so we moved pitches - no problems. We stayed dry, despite the fact that we did have rain. We have no ground sheet, so we do notice the differences in the grass. We did warn a couple of other people not to choose that pitch.
I have had a site owner phone me and cancel my booking because to the state of the ground.
I wouldn't have minded, but the site we were on was NOT a riverside site !....yet, you would never have thought it to look at the state of it ! Also, unless we book early we find we can't get a pitch where we want when we want. We have another week at the end of August when we want to go camping and I am having difficulty now finding anywhere that's not fully booked. We like ' select ' sites, no games rooms or club houses etc in nice surroundings..often David Bellamy awarded sites...and these get booked quickly, so really you have to make the decision to book them well in advance and that's not really down to camping experience. I've been camping for some years and find that if you want a decent campsite with clean loos and such like, you have to plan ahead.
Hi genie.
It depends on your circumstances the only site we book ahead is Slapton sands in the spring were we use an EHU but this site is regular for the birdwatching. The rest of the year we may book the week before we go if the destination is important, but most of the time it is the going for us not were. All we ask now is a clean toilet and a shower is always nice even if it is in an old farm building. But by using the C&C Club CS sites and been free to go anywhere and phoning the day before we are due to go we always find a site, but I am sure if you require a pitch especially with a hookup in August on one of the more affluent sites you would need to book well in advance,Once again it every one to the way they like to do it,But we feel we have more control our way, but we have the benefit of been retired and tired
all the best

Hi rex...well I'm not retired yet, but definately feel the tired bit !....can you recommend any sites, rex, that I might try? ( although we're not a member of the C&C club..)...I don;t really mind where we go ( we live in the Midlands ) and we can do without EHU if needs be. Near a beach or river suitable for swimming is what I'm after, with a reaonable loo and shower and the quieter the better !...( we're in a tent and have kids so we have to have washing facilities )...can you point me in the direction of anything suitable?
hi genie.
Quite site this time of the year are few and far between.
But C&C Clubs site Slapton sands Would suit your needs but could be a little busy but if they stick to their six meter ruling will not be crowded. The beach is a about 500 yards from the site it is not sand, but shingle and the water just goes up and down the beach so is suitable for swimming at all states of the tide.Check the Campsite search for others reviews and as the weather as put a lot of people you may still get an EHU should you want one,Good site for camping this weather slightly sloping in places so you may be lucky
and get one of these pitches and the walks around the Lay(lake)largest natural lake in the UK.are wonderfull.
The managers down there this year are first class so no worry there and if you go for a week you can join the club with the money you pay for the none member pitch fee.
Pitches should be OK but ask when you phone. Most of the small site I use are waterlogged That is why I have not been away for a month now
All the best

Must admit now kids don't come much preffer Cs or CL sites, booking goes against my idea of camping ie get in car and go
Hi romany...I like the idea of get up and go too ( although mines got up and on it's way out ! )...but with kids and dogs, it's not that easy, for me...I have to have a pretty clear plan of where we are going and what to expect when we get there.....if it were just the two of us then, no, I this wouldn't be such an issue...indeed, we plan to tour round the whole UK coast in VW camper when we retire ! ( can't wait ! )... and we'll just take what we find.
Rex, that's just it....sites are few and far between at this time of year...hencewhy I need to book in advance.... threat of mud or not !...still checking out all the campsites on here for any slight chance of late Aug availability....e-mailed a few but no luck so far....so not holding out much hope.
I have just returned from 4 nights at Fforest Fields and was very impressed how they managed the site in this terrible weather.Large areas were roped off that were either too wet or were resting.Planks of wood were placed to walk on to help stop area becoming a mud bath too.
I was very carefull picking my pitch,I chose an area that had not been used recently and was not far to walk to the facilities without turning grass intp mud. Also i parked mt car on the edge of the grass and never moved it until i came home.
Camping in these conditions is possible,a lot depends on us but also a lot is down to the site owners,i just wish other owners were as carefull and proud as they are at Fforest Fields !
We pitched in really bad weather on Thursday, pitch was really muddy, weather got quite warm so it dried quite nicely. Although we de-camped this morning to a rather unpleasant smell coming from one corner of the tent. On investigation, we found 2 dead frogs sandwiched between our footprint and our groundsheet
Can only think that they crawled between there to make the most of the dampness created while pitching in the rain.
Needless to say, the tent got a good scrubbing before packing.
