Hi,

I'm a long time lurker, first time poster, so be gentle...

I've just bought my first family camping stove, which runs from a 907 Gaz bottle.

My question is; after I've packed it away, am I supposed to store the bottle with the regulator still attached, or do I remove it?

Am I okay to leave the hose attached to either my stove or the regulator? It's ***really*** tight and hard to put on / take off.

Any safety issues I should be aware of when storing the bottle? I don't want to pop down to my cellar one day and blow the house up.

Thanks in advance,

Andy

Hi,

When you buy a new bottle they are kept outside, I imagine for safety reasons. I live in a tower block and gas bottles are verboten since Ronan Point collapsed after one blew up.

I store my bottles in the shed, i leave the regulator on to protect the valve from getting blocked although if you have one of the screw in handles you can remove it, personally i think i'd be tearing the shed apart looking for it when i needed it,I leave the hose connected to the cooker and store the cooker indoors so as not to get damp and rust

I take the bottle off the regulator for transport as well as storage. If you don`t take the regulator off then put the bottle in the car to get nudged around by other luggage, there`s a slight chance the regulator will loosen and perhaps allow gas to leak. The screw in carry handle is a lot safer...and makes the bottle easier to store as well. So yes, my advice is to take the bottle off. I store my bottles in the outer section of my basement utility room, where there is plenty of ventilation. (Read raging drafts...) I wouldn`t store them in the main house, no.

I leave the regulator and hose connected together but unscrew the hose at the cooker end. My particular model of cooker has a screw in brass connector, so this is easy to do. I would do it anway though....much easier to pack or store a cooker without a hose flapping around.

Tip for putting the hose end onto push-on fittings...wet the end of the hose. (Spit is fine, though icky!) Twist it to put it on the fittings, don`t just push.

You should remove the regulator and replace the plug/carrying handle which acts as a secondary seal to prevent leakage.

Leaving the regulator attached keeps the valve open and the valve operating spring under compression, which is not good practice.  When the stove is disconnected from the gas bottle you should also open the valves of the stove slightly to allow the washers to regain their original shape in order to function correctly.

Just about to go on my first camping trip tommorrow. We have brought a small stove but have the gas canisters. Are there any particular storage methods for those?

I leave the regulator on the stove and screw the handle back on to the bottle.  I store ours in the shed. I think that you are advised not to store them in a cellar as the gas is heavier than air so if you get a leak it would not dispearse but just build up.

Hi Morph - with the small "aerosol can" style canister I just keep the screw top lid, when you finish with your stove put the lid back on and store in garage/shed preferably.... just like the larger canister discussed above.  With the 907 we always travel with the screw in handle - not the regulator - and again it is stored that way in our garage.

Much safer than messing about with the hose attachment (once you've got a tight fit, keep it that way!) and don't like the thought of regulator permanently attached, much more liable to be knocked about in a busy car!!!

Have fun and enjoy your first trip.......... lucky with the weather too!
