we use gas - propane on a tillry with grill - similar to caming gaz job - propane gets rid of the gas freeze issue - petrols a bit of a clat in my opinion and you can use gas cooker for quick heat up in the morning petrol stinks the tent out

Firstly don't EVER use a petrol stove inside a tent less than a 4 berth or low roof. I have 6 tents, in the case of all I allways light mine outside as well.

Depends what type of camper you are really. I backpack and wild camp and converted to petrol last year and never looked back since. It boils much faster, runs well at 2,000m plus and not affected by severe cold as gas is.

However, you need to look after it and learn how it works as can flare when cold. I've banned myself from using mine after a few drinks for this reason.

If your trecking and packbacking the MSR Whisperlite is the best bit of kit your ever own, if not then I'd say stick with the Coleman duel fuel which I also have and is good.

Hi Dave,

Just to pick your brains.  Could you give me idea how much to pay for Aspen 4T, as I have been trying on the web and most suppliers only have 2T,

thanks,

Ellid

A 5L bottle will cost around £12-13. My local dealer had to order 3 x 5L bottles from aaoil but I let a few friends know who cleared his shelves very quickly!

No No No No No !!!!!

This is a 'trick' sometimes employed by campers using Meths burning stoves (ala Trangia) but DO NOT EVER, as in NEVER, put water in your petrol burning stove. O.K. ?

If you could find one 2nd hand, I'd suggest an Optimus 22 paraffin stove.
Twin adjustable burners and safer than a petrol stove .. but with that paraffin smell you either love or hate.
Problem is they don't make 'em any more and prices for 2nd hand ones can be expensive, £60 - 70plus

We're Coleman Dual Fuel newbies and I would agree with the positive things said here. It took a few goes to get the hang of it but after that it was fine. I am pleased I had a 'play' before we went away though, it payed off.

I must say I have never noticed the petrol smell. We have a cabanon kitchen tent, as there is NO WAY I would cook inside a nylon tent, and even my mother-in-law, who was dead against using petrol to cook, had to admit that she couldn't smell any petrol fumes.

Who ever brought in the idea of adding 5% water to ANY type of fuel to cut down the carbon smoke FORGET IT .Don't you think that if it was practical and safe, the manufacturer would gladly add 5% water to there product and make a bomb? That's probably what you will make a bomb.

Petrol burners will boil water faster, they pack smaller and do not suffer from frozen gas syndrome (try cooking on a gas stove at ten below - it's slooooow going).

Try catching me camping at 10 below - not a chance!

Going back to the smell issue, We've used dual fuel fir three years and I'd not previously noticed the smell but mainly we use a kitchen or daytent to cook in. We've done the last couple of trips and cooked in the Cabanon(s) and I have noticed a bit of a chemically smell.

It co-incides wuth having had a new generator, which I imagine is just a co-incidence? Presumably it might also be a specific fuel?

I might investigate the Aspen links for next year...

Coleman dual fuel every time.

Well worth the expense and you won't believe how little fuel it uses.

Hi all, we had a gas stove with the grill, and after trying to get 2 kids and a dog and all the camp stuff in the car, as well as a cooker, and a gas bottle in the back, we have gone for the coleman dual fuel, from Ultimate Outdoors for £54.99 or i have seen them on ebaythat are alot less. We all so got the MSR 1 lt fuel bottles aswell.  from Tracey

Coleman for me as well.  We used gas when we first started camping and suffered with the cold and general slow boil times.  We needed another stove as we have gone back to camping now and then and went for Coleman dual ring.  Best thing since sliced bread.  Much better than gas.

We do not cook inside our 6 man Vango, we use a pop up shelter outside.
