Hiya

I've read a few posts about camp stew.

Princes stewed steak, tinned potatoes/peas/carrots .... sounds lovely!

Just wondering if anyone can recommend a tinned chicken in gravy? I find some tinned meat looks a bit iffy so if anyone can recommend one I'd be grateful!

Going camping later on today and calling in the shop on the way!!!

Hiya jopow

mmmmm.....I treat all tinned meat with suspicion, its over processed, and really bad for you. don't go there!  Don't get me onto tinned veg either....blurgh.

I've always taken some chicken breasts or mince with me (or buy on the way) that are dead quick to cook, along with some basic fresh stew veggies, a coupla stock cubes, dried herbs and something like pearl barley, ickle pasta shapes or lentils to thicken it and hey presto, you've got a fresh pot of somthing yummy that you know exactly what's gone in it.

Also, if you like thai food, a thai green curry is dead easy, onion, green pepper, chicken breasts or thighs, chopped, green curry paste and a tin of coconut milk!  I've cooked in in the wok in about 15 mins.  Serve with a bit of rice, top nosh.

You're probably wondering "how much cooking crap does she take with her?"  actually, not that much, my best tip to take all your flavourings, herbs etc is to buy an Indian marsala tin - its got about 7 little metal pots in one 9 inch metal tin.  You can get loads of bits and bobs in this and it doesn't take up much room - honest!

Finally...and I suppose this is a cheat....I make loads of stew etc at home, freeze it and then take the frozen stew with me in the coolbox!  acts as a cooler until it defrosts and then we eat!

happy campin' an' a cookin'!!!

Frizbomb x

Good tips there Frizbomb! We cook and take a first nights meal, and we find a middle sized wok with lid is a very versatile bit of cooking kit.....We also take some of those sauce sachets (like Blue Dragon) so we can have sweet n sour, black bean sauce etc on a stir fry.

One meal we do from tins that is very good for veggie guests is a curry using tins of chick peas and spinach and chopped tomatoes, with some onion and garlic, and curry seasonings either from a jar, a sachet our our little collection of spices we take with us.

We always "cooked from scratch" in the tent.  One concession we made was to use tinned potatoes because I used to love them.

Latterly, we had an EHU and took a slow cooker which meant that we would come back to the tent with a lovely hot meal waiting for us.

Now we have a caravan, we still use the slow cooker.  It was really useful on our long holiday recently.

We very rarely eat processed food anything but you can now buy tinned potatoes, carrots, peas etc. in unsalted and unsugared water.

M&S tinned stewing beef isn't too bad.

We keep some of all of these in the camping box as useful emergency food.

I cant eat tinned meat of any sort. Sorry but it looks disgusting. Just as easy and much more healthy to eat fresh.

We have a two ring stove.  Its our first year camping and so far these are my favourites.

Easiest & Quickest...bacon & cabbage with new spuds.  Wash the cabbage at home and bring in a plastic bag.  Boil bacon and spuds while we put up the tent.  This is always our first night dinner.

Chicken curry & rice..made with chicken breasts.

Stew and a BBQ some night.
