Hello there,

does anyone have advice about taking bikes on a camping trip -

i.e. anyone have tips on how to stop them getting stolen if you go out for a few hours without the bikes?

Do many campsites have lockable bike sheds or at least bike racks?

Also- can anyone advise about a cheap but good bike rack for a Toyota Yaris and two mountain bikes? I wouldn't really want one where I have to pay extra for special lighting etc.

Many thanks indeed!

We use a high mounted bike rack and (touch wood) have never had any problem with theft..

Have been camping over thirty years and cannot remember a bike shed/rack ever!

We always take a bike lock and if we get a pitch next to a fence; chain them to that but have never been concerned about it at all

When we take bikes, we lock them to the trailer if we've taken it or alternatively we lock them inside the tent onto the gas bottle which is connected to the fridge and then put a dog spike through the lot and add a saucepan or two to the chain!!

It won't stop someone determined but it makes it tricky and it will make a lot of noise!

We chain ours to a fence if we can or, more usually, we chain them together and to the bike rack itself.  We have a towbar mounted rack which cost about the same as my bike so I wouldn't want to lose that either (especially as we couldn't then get the bikes home!)  We turn the bikes round so that they are back to front/ upside down on the rack so that it can't be put straight onto a car and then chain the whole lot together.  We then hide it behind the tent out of sight.  My bike was cheap as far as bikes go and my OHs was 2nd hand so didn't cost a huge amount either.  As such we aren't too worried about taking them camping.  If I had an expensive bike, I'd probably think twice about it.

Unfortunately, I've never come accross bike storage or racks on a campsite before which I find quite surprising given how many people take theirs camping.  I'd be happy to pay a small fee to know mine was secure and I'm sure other people would too.

Have a look here http://www.xenasecurity.co.uk/home/current/lock/#

I use a disc lock for my motorbike but they do some other options including cable lock attachments http://www.xenasecurityusa.com/product/motorbikes/CableLock/eng/

They are very good quality and last for years. My alarm unit just went a bit nuts after 1 1/2 years of constant daily use. I emailed them and they are sending me a new alarm unit for free!

You could pull a chain through the bikes frames and attach the alarm lock. It it's tampered with it will give off a 115db alarm (don't worry, it doesnt go off at a gust of wind)

Check your local motorcycle dealers or online for suppliers

On our last camping trip we put the bikes in the back of the car because there was only us 2 and it was chucking it down with rain. But we did notice that a couple with kids had put a stake in the ground and attached their bikes to that. Others on the campsite just left them on the ground next to their tents.

If we can't find a tree or fence to chain our bikes to, we use a long chain lock fixed around the rear towing eye of our car

Usually use a few locks and chain to a sturdy tree
