Yes, I agree about a sand pit. We went to a site last year with a very large sand pit, abour 20` x 20`, with a collection of inexpensive digging toys availible. It was amusing to see all ages of kids from two to sixteen making sandcastles and digging away! There was a split rail fence surrounding it, so you could watch your kids but bikes, dogs etc couldn`t get in easily.

That site also sold eggs from their own farm and if the site owner liked your kids, they were allowed to come down and help feed the free-range flock. There were several pet chickens wandering around the campsite too, and a notice up to the effect that if you found a new laid egg on site, you were allowed to keep it. We never found one but the kids spent hours looking!

If you don't mind me asking Val, where was that - it sounds like the sort of site we'd like.

Thanks

It would be nice to be able to borrow equipment like picnic benches, rotary dryers, high chairs and perhaps even simple barbecue equipment on payment of a large but mostly refundable deposit, with said equipment to be bookable in advance to avoid none being availible. This happened on a campsite in France I was on recently, and it worked very well.

Smashing idea! Never encountered that in the UK - wish I had!

Our family used to stay on a farm B&B in SCotland when I was a kid and the farmer's wife used to employ early-rising child (me) with a basket and off I went to scavenge all over the farmyward, sheds and barns for the VERY free-range eggs that would later be served up for brekkie!

HI there - we too like the "back to basics" side of camping and getting a real feeling of the outdoors. My OH would love to see more campsites with separate areas for real fires - ie fire pit etc .

From a female perspective - good showers -plus somewhere decent to put / hang clothes whilst in shower or even a couple of separate changing cubicles. This means you can keep your clothes drier and also vacate the shower quicker to allow next person in. I usually take a bin bag into shower to hang on door to keep clothes dry as some shower facilties are better than others!

Happy Camping

Kerry
