I would just like to take a moment to let you all know how much we enjoyed our first camping trip at the weekend. Thank's to all the info on this website we were prepared and the campsite was all the reviews said it would be.

Even though we managed to forget a few things (coffee and our fold up chairs!), had to put up with noisy neighbours on the first night and gusting winds on the last night, we will be heading back out there asap.

On that note is it a risk to be going camping in October.....obivously we will be avoiding the north of Scotland....regarding the possiblilty of cold nights?

Opinions and experiences welcome.

There are several threads on heating tents with or without ehu or you could just invest in good sleeping bags and thermals!  We're going to a meet in November and will be buying a good heater.

In addition to the advice given by Lorrnev, good lighting is also important as it goes dark much earlier out of  season.

I thought I would share my experience with you re the local wildlife in Bexhill this week.  I havn't been camping for a long time so my friend and I decided to beg and borrow enough gear to see us through a long weekend.

I brought with me my prized cooking pots which had seen me through four years in the TA all over Britain.  On the first night we BBQd bananas and then melted some chocolate in my precious cooking pot. As it started to rain heavily we retreated to our tent to eat out goodies and left the pots etc outside to get wet.

In the morning all our pots, plus a large pack of bacon from inside our tent, had gone.  All I can think is that the badgers, which we had been watching and feeding during the evening, had decided to return for some pud and something for breakfast maybe.

I loved those pots ! ! !

What kind of sleeping equipment do you have ?

October just before the clocks go back is a great time for camping.

For getting out and about during the day, you may need a sweatshirt under your fleece but you'd be surprised how warm October can be during the day.  Don't forget your waterproofs of course and take plenty of changes of clothes!

It can get windy in the West Country in the autumn and prolly elsewhere so make sure your tent is suitable, in good nick and that you peg all the guy lines.

At night I have an old blanket under my Thermorest with a newer blanket and sheet on top of the Thermorest and a feather duvet on top of me!

An alternative to the duvet is my down sleeping bag with a fleece liner and to wear a sweatshirt in bed: I don't need the sweatshirt with the duvet.

I go camping on my own in the autumn so I don't bother to cook in the evening and prefer to eat out.

I don't have LHU or tent heaters, I go to the pub and then early to bed!

our set up goes like this. airbed,fleece blanket fitted sheet, Vango double sleeping bag.Before the Vango i used to put fleece blankets in side sleeping bag with the botton sewed up so my feet didnt poke out. Oh and my Wolly hat.

Layering seems to be the key to warm here, last weekend we had the following; tarpaulin, SIG, picnic blanket, inflatable mattress, fleece blanket, vango double sleeping bag and we were wearing thermal tops and leggings! I think for October we may add a thin duvet.

A sheltered site seems to be a good idea to avoid autumnal breezes, any suggestions?
