We have done in the past, but for safety and convenience, a utility tent is a wise choice, especially if you have children or pets. It also frees up loads of space and clutter in the tent.

A modern tent is essentially a large plastic bag and a camping stove isn't the safe, securely built-in hob you have at home.  Nor is it as well ventilated.

If you cook inside a tent, it's only a matter of time before someone is just careless enough and, well, I'm sure you can imagine what would happen if you and your kids were inside a large plastic bag that was on fire...

That said, a lot of people do it.  And perhaps for a couple of weeks a year, for perhaps the 5-10 years people seem to go camping for, they'll all get away with it.

I've only ever cooked in a kitchen tent or a designated kitchen area in a frame tent and trailer tent.

I would never cook in a modern poly type tent.
