Hi

Has anyone used the Metcheck text service this year while on holiday

in this country?

We used it for a postcode in Cornwall last week.

It predicted light rain for some days and cloudy conditions for others.

We actually got the torrential rain (luckily overnight) that everyone else seemed

to know about, at the beginning of the week.

Are there more reliable sources of weather prediction I can use next time

while on the road with no internet access?

Thanks

Tiggi

we use weather.co.uk It predicted sunshine and showers for almost the whole of the two weeks we were in Cornwall. But infact, we had the best weather we've ever had there and all came home with a mediteranian tan.

As far as predicting yourself. I find that if it looks dark in the directing I'm heading and all the cars coming the other way have their headlights on, then its probably going to be chucking it down when I get there.

Seriously though, you could try one of these: http://www.ukweathershop.co.uk/acatalog/oregonscientific_BAR626U.html

I'll second metcheck being pants, I prefer to look out of the window these days, far more accurate.

Thanks for the suggestions.

What a laugh! Predicting sunshine and showers for a British

summer and getting paid for it! I'll have one of those jobs please.

Remember that predicting the weather, especially in this country, is hardly a precise science. I always say that we Brits talk about the weather because we have so much of it!

In the spring, the "experts" were predicting another very hot, long, dry summer...and look what we've got!

Sangria_girl and I usually check bbc.co.uk/weather, weather.co.uk and metcheck....taking the common ground between the three. But sometimes there is no agreement at all, one service predicts sun, another rain and the third dry but cloudy.

Its a good idea to use these weather services as a guide, but remember even if they predict "sun from 6am til 3pm, rain 3pm-5pm, then clear overnight"...that is only a prediction...it may be no more accurate than Nostradamus...

Hi
The way I see the forecast now is they seem to get the overall UK picture near the mark, but to expect county by county reports is asking two much. They seem to get the wind direction within a 45Deg sector right. But The rest is pot luck. and as Carl says when you are nearing your destination the clouds and oncoming vehicles are the best pointers, of what to expect. But if the met office as indicated that the rain will be constant they are usually right It is the amount of sun they get wrong.
I will delay a trip if they say that the area will have heavy rain, but will always go on any other forecast, as if it is raining when you get there, it will stop after a while to let you get pitched most times.
Have a nice weekend all.
Rex

I liked the idea of the postcode level of detail, especially for Cornwall

as we could have chosen a different area in the county to camp

I realise that it's not a precise science. Meridian TV used to have a brilliant

weather man, Carl somebody who gave very good forecasts for Dorset.

We haven't camped so often since he retired some years ago.

But after last weeks experience a bit of rain isn't so scary so maybe

we wont be so obsessed with the weather forecast!
