I can't swear to this, but I would think you'd measure the diameter of the pole itself. However, just to be on the safe side, measure both & clearly state what the measurements are if you're ordering on the net. If you're getting a replacement pole from your local camping shop, then just take the broken pole with you to ensure you get the correct size.
