I've just got back from a week away.  We had a group who were inconsiderate for one night and the site owners asked them (politely but firmly) to leave the next day.  It removed that problem and word also got round the site that it had happened - no more problems.  After 10.30 at night all was peaceful and still.

I wouldn't like totally "dry" sites.  It is nice to sit with a can of beer or glass of wine in the evening watching the sun go down.  It would be a real shame if people who just enjoy a quiet drink without overdoing it had to suffer because some don't know when to stop.

I would imagine that all of the people who contribute to this site are considerate campers and follow the code of ethics that determine what is acceptable whilst camping.
However, there appears to be a growing number of people who see camping as an excuse to have a glorified extended booze-up whilst ignoring the rights of others to have a peaceful time.
I wish I had an answer or a way to stop this. Maybe there should be separate areas within campsites ? Perhaps a 'party area'(with higher tarrifs to pay for security) and a 'serenity area' within sites that the individual groups could choose from. Not an ideal solution, but maybe it would solve a few problems? Any other suggestions ?

A good cold dousing from a hose would probably the kill the party spirit, with the added benefit of entertaining the rest of us.  Just needs someone brave enough to turn the tap on.........

Just been thinking about my suggestion and I wouldn't be surprised to see some form of 18 - 30 type campsite pop up in the future. -- Imagine....... They could all get popped and pilled up together away from the rest of us !!!

as said before go on the campsite reviews.  I have got most of our camping hol sites off this site by reading the reviews and we have not been disappointed by any of them. they are honest.  we like the smaller family run sites cos they tend to be quieter. as long as they have a kids play area thats fine.   dont let this put you off though

I do, I do read the reviews, but when the last review was from August 2006 and didn't really say anything bad about noise at least, what can you do? Okay, I could avoid such a site, but its not really a fair judgement is it?

I would be willing to chance a "smaller family run site", but the reviews don't exactly say that's what they are.

Another point about the reviews is how far back do you go before you consider the information to be out of date, for example, if someone writes a review two years ago complaining of grotty showers, and nobody reviews it since, does it still stand or do you chance it in the hope they've been refurbished (to be quite honest as long as a shower is warm and I don't have to share it with the local farm animals I don't really care on it's condition, in fact animals are usually less noisier and intrusive on a night time).

As things stand, I've bought a second tent (third if you count the single skin two man thing ) so I can hot-foot it out of Leeds on a Friday night and return home on a Sunday. Therefore I need to stay within a reasonable distance so I can ensure I arrive and pitch before dark, with car, wife and kids (in that order ). Yes, I know weekends will tend to be busier, and this makes things slighty more difficult in being too choosy, hence the point about accepting a site with old reviews , and not specifically mentioning quietness. Also I'm finding that most sites don't take bookings for just two nights.

I'm just really miffed that there are such inconsiderate people, but sadly it seems that this is becoming the norm. I initially posted to test the water as it were to see if I'd misread the situation and that camping had moved on and modernised into a glorified p!$$ up. Thankfully most comments here seem to confirm I'm not out of touch.

I sympathise with some of the situations you have found yourselves in re noisy neighbours. We have experienced this really only once, so not to experienced at that part. We do tend to stick to regulated club sites, and this sort of nullifies the problem. Private or commercial sites tend to get the  ' we're here for a good booze up ' brigade.  Imagine being in a resort with people like that. Sometimes there is a lot to be said for rain. It sends the sillies to ibiza.
