Lol, but I was like that too, and no matter how much my mum tried to tell me it was fun, that i'd like it in the end etc, I hated it as a teenager.  Yes I love camping now, but from the ages of 11 to about 18/19 I absolutely loathed it, and nothing would have got me to go camping if I thought I wouldn't have had somewhere I could escape to that was my own little bit of space.  As a small child I loved it.

The girl I'm talking about has been camping since she was 6 weeks old and has always liked it up to now.  She has now decided that NO WAY will she share a room with her parents.  Having been there, I really can't blame her, even tho it wouldn't bother me half as much now.

Teenae yrs are a funny time for girls and I think you have to be a bit sensitive to their feelings.

Its a shame cos it would be much easier for her parents with the small tent they had, but I can see why they gave in.

We bought our hartford xxl so that if it was chucking it down us and the kids would have the space to not drive eachother nuts.  If we had to pay for double pitch we would have to pay, I don't like the idea but hey ho.

Here is me giving my opinion and I haven't even gone camping yet lets hope we get the bloomin thing up with out killing eachother.

Exactly the reasons we bought our hartford XXL and it works a treat.

Tony, can two adults put this tent up? or are we likely to need extra hands?

2 adults easy peasey.  Took us about 80 mins first time but have now got it down to 50 mins.

I am sure I posted a while back how we put it up and I will have a search around tonight and post later on this.  It is also worth going onto the outwell website as there is a short video giving some good basic pointers.

If campsites want to limit the size of tent, they should make it clear in their terms and conditions. That then becomes a commercial decision whether they want to put off some campers.

As they charge per person also, they must get more revenue per foot by having one larger tent, rather than two smaller ones. And the more campers, the more chance to sell in their shop or whatever venture they have.

I have bought a larger tent as that was available and recommended. To change the goalposts now would be very unfair. I have bought a smaller tent specifically for a site that had a size limit. If the pitches are limited, that's a physical limitation. But charging for two pitches would make me buy two smaller tents and I bet they would take up more room, so it would be an own goal.

I did hear of a hotel that charges £56 a night for a family of four. I am just about to pay £20 per night for camping off season. Obviously over a few nights that mounts up, but if it were £40, I might be wondering why I was camping at all.

ok so I couldnt see this type of reply up in this thread and as i have said on other threads im far from an expert, infact only having been camping once for 10 days i would say im not even a beginner LOL

But what I saw on site suprised me it was one flat fee regardless of tent size, the majority of tents on site were far bigger than i had expected with very few "touring" style tents.

now would it not be better for sites to encourage the smaller tents by giving them a little discount rather than penalising the bigger "average" tent?

when we asked in the office about having another tent up for storage reasons we were told it would have to be paid for, this wasnt the managers idea but it came from on high. She agreed with us that it was madness for a small compact 2 man NON elec tent to be charged the same as the biggest caravan on site  + £2 ehu (site fees were £20pn)

From my point of view when you got a group of 12+ going on holiday for the same price as 2 there is something wrong there somewhere.

I should point out that this was on a holiday park site, so more people = more money behind the bar (if they use the bar!)

would now be a good time to mention big tents + windbreaks + multiple cars???? LOL

ROB :)

You are right roblade, there are many perspectives and coming up with a system that was perceived as fair would be very difficult.

My bottom line is make it clear the criteria and there is no arguement.

Katy, good point.

Funny that you didn't like camping young and now you love it.

Lol - love it? - I'm obsessed with it!!

My dad was talking about it the other day and I think he's a little bit bemused by it all to say the least!  He still remembers the years when he had to literally put me in the car kicking and screaming.
