Here comes the bucket of cold water!

A pal of mine is at Barnstaple Police Station. He has told me that it would horrify anyone with a grain of sense the manner in which people behave when they are on Holiday. Petty theft is rife and please don't think that other Campers look out for each other because in his experience, it doesn't happen

Just because you are on Holiday, don't think that the Wicked People are not. Behave sensibly and put your possessions away or take them with you.

Sorry to be such a killjoy but these comments equally apply to Brits abroad

I tend to work on the premise out of sght out of mind. I have wind break in front of my tent and everthing is either put inside the tent or behind the wind break. That way no-one is tempted.  Unfotusanately my son did get some of his gear nicked at T in the Park so maybe you should be careful at festivals and only take the old and tatty or cheap gear with you.

Lock it in the car and put the car keys somewhere safe ON your person....

Another tip ...
At night time I have a hard travel /makeup/wash case I take my biggest(sharpest) knife and slip it in to the bag and take this in the bed pod with me.
At night if you NEED to get out in a hurry you cant be trying to mess with zips and a pen knife takes too long to open just mind the kiddies dont get hold of it...

Festival camping security is very different to normal camping security. On a campsite my tent is tidy and ordered. Any valuables are kept in the car unless being used.

When I go to festivals, I keep my money and phone with me at all times. Normally in a zipped inside pocket. When I am sleeping they are wrapped in clothes which are put in my sleeping bag stuff sac which I use as a pillow. I even wrap the cord of the stuff sac around my wrist. When I leave my tent all valuable come with me and everything else is emptied about inside my tent. That way no-one is going to stick their head in my tent and see a bag and nick it, even if does contain clothes.

hi guys,
some interesting posts.

i would just like to ask, earlier this year i went with ehu and took my telly. at first i put it in the car when i left the tent, but to be honest after that i left it in the tent out of view. looking back was i lucky it didnt get taken???
i would like to think that we all look out for each other but this isnt always the case.

to be honest i did spend a lot of time worried that the electrical items may go astray, and will most likely go without ehu in the future.

Campers don't all look out for each other, maybe they used to.....

My mum went camping in the summer in North Wales and whilst they went to loos/showers their freindly camping neighbours (a group of girls) who were almost packed up to go, went in to My parents tent and helped themselves to all sorts of bits and bobs namely,Phone, holdall few clothes/ books in, cds. before leaving the site.  All of these items were in the bedroom pods which were zipped up. The campers opposite confirmed that they saw the girls go in the tent and come out but didn't say anything because weren't sure if they knew each other as they said how many groups of campers go together these days. Not only did get robbed by campers it was watched by another set of campers........

Also (and i don't want to scare anyone here) My FIL went camping with his girlfriend after a heavy night drinking they stumbled off to bed, woke in the morning to find bedroom pods open and her handbag and his wallet, mobile and car keys had all been taken from their bedroom pod (they had put them safely away before drinking)whilst they were asleep, this was possibly a camper who had targetted them after seeing them drunk and concluding they would probably sleep heavily...

NOW in no way would tar everyone with the same brush and i definately think these  are rare incidents and just very bad luck.

I have always kept most things in the boot of the car for two reasons. Firstly can't be seen and would be a hell of a lot harder/noisier to break into car boot, secondly keeps tent from feeling cluttered.

I think in this day and age with the pressure everyone feels to own gadgets etc and the lack of respect most people have for each other now having things pinched whilst camping is more likely than ever....My tip don't take anything of value unless neccasary And since this incident i now stick purse and phone at bottom of sleeping bag (luckily i am quite short)

Melx

When we are camping, all valuables are either in the bedroom pods at night or locked in the roofbox or boot of the car.

Most household insurance policies would cover you if items were locked away safely(boot or in a lockable roofbox), if they cover you at all on a camping trip.

My household insurance did not cover me at all on my first big camping trip, and I got insurance through C&CC, that covered the tent & all equipment whilst on site. Cost about £50.00per annum. Suprising how much sleeping bags, clothes, stove, tables & chairs, EHU etc can all add up to, if it goes missing.

Out of sight, out of mind is all very well, but better to be insured for added piece of mind.
