Love camping but only done it during the late spring and summer so far.  want to go in october during school hols, but scared it will be to cold.  What do other campers do out with the tent during the cold weather (I can deal with the rain), we are going with my 2 sons who are 7 and 10, they get bored in the tent, although I would be happy staying in my sleeping bag or by the plug in heater with a bottle of wine.

Were thinking of going to a site near us with a indoor swimming pool (used it many times), but now have a bigger tent (7 man and their restriction is 6 man).

I am talking about camping in scotland and going only about 1 - 1.30 hours away from fife, does anyone have a suggestion?

you could fib about the size of your tent, seriously tho there must be plenty of space for a big tent on a campsite in october.

Rubbish its all about preparation. Just come back from a glorious weekend in Cornwall where the weather was extremely warm during the day and consequently very cold (4 degrees) at night. However, we had extra sleeping bags to cover the airbeds and fleece fitted sheets. We also had 3 season bags with bag liners and we were quite comfortable overnight. You will also need some form of heating, we had an electric fan heater which we used in our day tent along with the jumpers and fleeces. It kept us warm during the evenings even though both th day tent and our VV500 have no SIG.

..is your tent one of the massive ones, and does it say that it sleeps 7 on it like some of them do? - if not and you want to go book in as a six berth after all there are only 4 of you using it and I doubt if it would feasibly sleep 7 with all the gubbins you need per person etc - site owners are def not well up on tents. Prob what they don't want is a massive tent with masses of people in it......and is it too cold????Not the cold as such that can be the problem just that it gets dark so early and there's longer for you to keep warm - we usually go bowling or to the cinema or pool and come back and do hot water bottles etc, all good fun, you can only try!! have fun!!

Usually it's about the maximum number of persons per pitch, not about the tent itself. Manufacturers always exagerate the size of their tents anyway. A 6 persons tents wil only comfortably sleep about 4 people, a 7 berth tent probabaly only 5 at most. Unless you'd like to sleep shoulder to shoulder very tightly. Usually they count about 50 cms per person. This will not even suffice for a regular air matrass or selfinflatble matress.

As to being too cold: that depends very much on your equipment, especially the quality of your sleeping bags and sleeping mats. Plus the location. The higher the location, the colder the nights. Lower and closer to the seaside will be warmer. Of course having a nice (and safe) heater will greatly improve confort during the evening. Camp fires may be nice as well, but, alas, not possible inside, unless you'd have a tipi or katan with preferably a special stove inside.

I must admit that I enjoy our caravan very much these days. With my tent I would never have contemplated camping in the snow, which I will do now. I did experience nightly frost when still tenting, without any problem due to proper equipment.

hi marynov

Tent is big (at least bigger than what we had previously- vango diablo 400), far more space which I love.  Yes it is one of those tents that has 700 stamped on the outside, which kind of gives it away, wish manufacturers wouldn't do that (have thought of covering it with tape), you could be right about campsite owners not wanting masses of people inside them, we only bought it for us and the 2 boys and use the middle pod for storage.

Would take extra blankets, duvets, hats etc if we do go.

We stayed at Sauchope Links at Crail two weekends ago and had a great time.

Can highly recommend it - there was a family there with a Vango Diablo 900 (absolutely huge !!)  so I'm sure they would accept your tent.

Check out the reviews of this site - they are all excellent.

Rod & Ali

Had a look at Sauchope Links previously but was alway put of as they quote "Please Note:Tent bookings for tents no bigger than 12ftx6ft (2 people)", so I have never tried the site and its only 30 minutes away from home.  Will definately give it a go next year as I love where it is and know that they do take bigger tents.

Thanks
