Any suggestions on a utility knife? have looked at both Leatherman and Swiss Army but due to the price I'm unsure which would be best. I used a cheap copy swiss army last summer and whilst it was OK if tough wotk was required the blades bent, werent sharp enough or tins and bottles remained unopened!

Depends what you want t ouse it for ?

If you only use the knife then buy a good quality knife rather than paying for loads of silly gadget you wont use ,I have a fab one , its a Muela ,cost a fair bit but still less than a go-go gadget thingy

forgot to add disclaimer : It is illegal to carry a knife without a valid reason for doing so .When the knife is not on your person you are solely responsible for making sure it is locked up safely where noone else can access it

Ha Ha go-go gadget, I like that description... Basically I feel a serated blade, standard blade, bottle/can opener, screw/phillips driver are items I take, so I thought why not get them in a fancy new shiny go-go gadget as also it would come in handy for taking up little space in the backpack when off walking. Another reason is I want a good knife to get me out of a sleeping pod and through the side of the tent in an emergency... yes I know I'm strange

There are lots of different models of swiss army knife so it's worth either finding a website that lists the options or finding a retailer that has lots.

I have a "Climber" model - I bought it purely because it had scissors and a corkscrew in the same model -as well as the more usual bottle opener, knife etc.

Mine was about forty quid I think around 7 or 8 years ago - It lives in my handbag and is very useful!

I have a leatherman wave. When I first got it i didn't think I would use it that much however I now use it in the home and garden as well as camping, and the blade is as good now as it was when i first had it.

I have various knives but the good all purpose one I carry is a Buck Knife with a belt holster that was a present from Baldrick. I also carry a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife in its "Camper" incarnation. I also have a cheapo knife and multitool set in my peg box.

Years ago I would have carried a good sheath knife too, but the lunacy and knee jerk reaction to knife crime makes that difficult now. I fail to see how banning average people from carrying knives makes any difference to knife crime when bigger and nastier knives than most sheath knives can be found in your average kitchen! So there!

If the blade is to get you outof your sleeping pod in a hurry you will need a fixed blade as how long will it take to get your swiss army blade out before your burned to the ground...?

Do knives still have that blade that looked like a bent bottle opener, I think it was for getting boy scouts out of horses hooves.

This has been asked before on this forum. I have bought most of the utility knifes and multitools. The best one i've had and still use is the Gerber 800 Legend Multi-Plier..

350

The Multi-Plier 800 LegendT is an entirely different kind of Multi-Plier. Designed for the user who needs extreme wire cutting ability, quick access to the components, spring loaded pliers, and a secure ergonomic grip, the new Multi-Plier 800 LegendT dominates the multi-tool category. Continuing the tradition of innovation, the new Gerber LegendT is the first multi-function tool with replaceable tungsten carbide wire cutter inserts. Much harder than any stainless steel, the Legend T wire cutter will cut through #2 hard carbon steel fishhooks, 1/16" piano wire, and 278lb stainless steel offshore fishing leader. In the event of damage, the triangular cutter can be rotated to a new edge with a Torx head wrench. When quick access to the components is a necessity, the LegendT has no equal. All components can be used without opening the tool, solidly locking into place once rotated out for use. The Multi-Plier 800 LegendT has a knife blade, scissors, Phillips screwdriver, small, medium, and large screwdriver, bottle opener, and patented saw coupler with RemGrit blade. The spring-loaded Fiskars scissors are the best scissors found on any multi-tool, being able to cut all braided fishing lines, hemmed denim, Cordura, and leather.

Technical Specs:

  • Overall Length: 6''
  • Length Closed: 4.25''
  • Weight: 9.7 oz.
  • Handle Material: Aluminum with Gator textured grips
  • Sheath: Ballistic nylon

Components:

Needlenose pliers with indexible, replaceable carbide cutters, fine edge knife, Fiskars scissors, cross point screwdriver, small, medium and large flat blade screwdrivers, bottle opener and file.
