Hi

We have recently purchased an Erde 122 trailer with PVC cover, and wondered what everyone else does with regards to security when stopping at services etc?

Also, we are travelling to France this summer and were wanting to stop overnight on the drive down, but have just thought about what we will do with the trailer overnight. We haven't budgeted for the hard lockable top this year (maybe next) so would appreciate any advise on the matter.

Regards

Jason and Dawn

We bought a trailer last year with a canvas cover. So far we haven't left it alone at a service station fully loaded. On the way to France we stopped at a service station, bought burgers and ate them beside the car. On the way home we had purchased food at a supermarket and stopped at an Aire and ate at picnic tables beside the car.

The biggest concern, even with a lockable lid is that someone will just take the trailer. On site we leave the trailer beside our tent and never really give it another thought. Yet I'm quite concerned about it in transit.

Same thoughts as the last post, do not leave it alone when stopped anywhere. Trailor security I always padlock it on the car with a chain when stopped, then put my SAS wheel clamp on as well. In the summer people still lose their caravans and trailors at the services, prime targets.

With the new trailer regulations for unbraked trailers, I use a motorcycle covered cable which is looped around the A-frame and around the towbar and padlocked. No way can they remove the trailer. Never had a problem with the trailer contents. (Yet!!!???)

Hi JP
Hi think you can purchase a small barrel lock that fit in a hole on the towing hitch on the Erdy for around £5
we had a Daxara that is made by the same people.
Check it out as it works a treat.
Regards
Rex.

I bought a long shackle padlock and pushed it through where the handle lifts up.In the upright position no one can let the handle down to release from the tow ball. Done that on both the car trailer and the motorcycle trailer.

Thanks for all the responses. I have pretty much settled on an SAS Hitchlock

My biggest concern was leaving the trailer overnight (locked onto my car with one of the suggested methods) in a hotel car park with no way of locking the actual contents of the trailer. I guess no-one really does this? So everyone does all the travelling in one go?

Yep sorry but there is no way I would leave all the contents in overnight even with a lockable ABS lid, I have the same trailer as you and we dont even leave it unattended at a service station, we also lock it to the EHU points at site when we have finished emptying it, I make take you half an hour but could you move the contents from the trailer for your overnight stay into the car in the space where you would normally be sitting so it can be locked in the car and I assume the car is alarmed, you can always cover it with a sheet (preferrably navy or black so it isnt visable at night) so no-one can see the actual stuff. I think the extra time spent moving it would be worthwhile for peace of mind alone, otherwise I would be up and down all night checking the trailer and wouldnt get any sleep anyway.

Look at it from the thief's point of view,  steal an expensive caravan or a comparatively cheap trailer.    Then breaking into a camping trailer what would you get out of it that is of any value other than to another camper.  If you were targeted by a thief that camps then stealing to order from a campsite makes more sense as the equipment is already unpacked for you.   Choosing a large commercial site where everybody is off at the facilities not a small friendly site where strangers would be noticed.   So all in all very few thefts of or from trailers as the contents are only valuable to us.

Thanks again for your input - we had resigned ourselves to a long day of travel - but wanted to check what the general feeling was with the trailer security regarding overnighting - So thanks for helping us to make up our minds.

On the bright side  - at least we have only settled for le Vendee and not the south of France this time!!!!

We have a hitch lock that can be used when the trailer tent is hitched to the car.
I don't stay long at services, just enough to visit the loo, and possible the shop.   Only time I would stop for a cuppa/food is if the car was in view of the cafe.
If is more than one adult, one of you could nip to the loo, while the other one waits, and then swap.
You are better off packing some food to eat in the car, or sitting outside in the service area, than buying food, especially at motorway services, which are usually over priced, and often poor quality.

We have a daxara trailer with a hitchlock on and a hardtop lid which is lockable. We spent a night in a travel lodge last summer on way down to devon and left the car hnd trailer in the car park and had no problems. Never even gave it a thought that somebody would nick anything - I must be a bit naive.

if you arnt filling the trailer above the top a large piece of ply wood with hasp and staple at each corner would lock on as a lid and give some protection

we are taking a trailer to France this year (first time) and have been thinking about what to do about an overnight stop. Not going to leave a trailer overnight in a hotel car park, don't fancy putting up then taking down the bear just for one night, so we are looking at buying two pop up tents for the overnight stop, quick easy no hassle and will come in useful for the odd weekend on the Gower.
