hello, was thinking maybe an electical hookup thingy might be useful for our tent, but having read the post above it all sounds a bit too much! Only want a light for nights but seems it may be a bit pricey for the odd weekends we get, are they worth it?

Well I love my fridge. For me that made all the difference. Being able to buy food in more reasonable quantities made sense with four kids. EHU leads have come down in price.

We started with ours simply for an electric fridge but it has ended up with us replacing our battery lights with an electric one that hangs in the middle of the tent, an electric kettle, an electric fan heater, George Foreman grill for long holidays, electric air pumps, a small 7 inch LCD TV and of course mobile phone chargers and the like. We now make sure we get the most out of the electric as it is the same charge no matter what you use. It is nice to have an electric kettle, much quicker getting the essential cuppa tea in the morning. We got ours from Ebay, its a RCD 3 way one with a 20 metre orange cable, I think we paid about £30 plus postage.

We bought a EHU years ago - only used it once!  Tend to make do with battery/gas lamps and a coolie bag and ice for a fridge and for electricity I have 2 jumpstart/powerpacks for when I do take the TV (which I only take if the weather looks a bit dodgy!) Apart from that we don't bother and don't miss it!

we to started of with battery this and rechargable that, last year we got an ehu, a fridge is a must on longer stays, so far this year we have bought a bigger tv, radiator, for the extra cost per night it is definetly worth the little bit of extra comfort.

The only reason I'd want one is so we could use a heater and extend the season.

I positively enjoy not having a tv, have always managed fine with just a coolbag and hired out ice packs (good excuse to eat out every night lol), have in car chargers for the phones and find we only need a battery lantern and LED headlight each.

To me, having all that extra stuff makes it seem, well ..... not like camping, really.

We're not, as you might say, purist campers...I for one need access to heat...and that's the only reason we bought the hook-up. ( having said that we use the heater on chilly evenings and chilly early mornings only...sometimes not at all - but I like to have option of switching on a cosy heat source ).  However, having electric lighting and acces to the lap-top ( to watch dvds and upload holiday pics and video ) is a bonus.

I camped last weekend, I obviously had EHU and a fan heater on low all night otherwise it would not have been possible for me, just because you take up camping with electric doesnt mean you have to go as far as a tele or toaster etc.. for those whose camping religion doesnt allow it far enough but I think everyone has their own take on camping, there isnt just one way. Having a fridge so you dont have to keep remembering to freeze icepacks (and pay for the priviledge in some sites) daily is a chore I dont miss but if that is true camping for you... so be it.

If you just want a light then there are plenty of alternatives.

I bought an EHU unit at the same time I bought the Combicool, and it's a great combination. I also use the EHU for chargers of various sorts and (when I used to use it) a hairdryer. Last year OH used it for his (neccessary-work) laptop, and we will run the DVD player off it if it's a wet night, though the kids actually prefer turning the back of the car into their own private cinema/gang hut.

I don't take anything else to use with EHU though. No heater/kettle/hair straightners/microwave/oven/toaster/slow cooker/light/tv/Playstation/iron/hoover/electric blanket/washing machine or anything else. None of them fit in with my particular style of camping because, basically, I can't be bothered carrying all that extra kit.

Word of warning though if you do decide to go over totally to EHU. It doesn't always work. Campsite electrics can fail at either the box, the local loop or overall and if this happens at night you don't always get it back on immediately. So ALWAYS take back-up, even if it's just a suitcase stove, extra fleece blankets and a torch. Also needing EHU can really restrict you in terms of where you can camp....many EHU pitches are smaller (less distance to wire up) and this can restrict the size of tent you can take. EHU pitches get booked up a lot faster than just going in the camping field, while many smaller campsites may not have EHU at all.

So think about what kind of camping you do and what you'll want the EHU for. I think it's a versatile piece of kit to have but I'm not a slave to it. Other folk won't leave home without it. Personal choice.

We're buying EHU this year, to use a fan heater. The last two summer hols we've had wet towels, shoes, swimwear and wetsuits all week and we're fed up with it. We just want to be able to dry some of these things to make life a bit better if the weather is bad. Will probably add an electric light, but definately not tv or games consoles as I think camping is a nice break away from that.
Most people recommend that you buy a proper make of cable, rather than a cheap Ebay one and it must have a circuit breaker.

Get a hook up and a fan heater, you'll never look back

Of course you don't NEED one but its nice to be able to sit in a bit warmth when you've been out all day, also handy for drying off damp stuff. The alternative is to be cold, miserable and wearing damp stuff the next day.

We camp without it as well and its definitely a miss but unfortunately some of the sites we like don't allow hook ups for tent campers.

As others have said its not a must have accessory but it is nice to be comfortable.

I agree with Val, i only use our EHU to make our holiday more comfortable, i dont wash or iron clothes, im on holiday !! I certainly dont have enough room for all the other stuff available grills, kettles etc. It is whatever suits your own needs.

Couldn't cope without EHU now!

We have a small Oil filled radiator as its safer than a fan heater. Plus its better for drying stuff on (just like you do at home).

We have a table top fridge that means we can have fresh cold milk, cold beers and wine, ice cubes, as well as burgers etc for the BBQ

Lights, The Heater, The 5" tv for rainy nights, The coolbox, Thats all we use it for - However its up to you what you want to use it for. After all its your holiday!!

I still go to sites without EHU for tents and enjoy them just as much - We put batteries in the Tv, Gas in our other heater, and icepacks in the cooler. Not to mention our 3 ufo lights instead of the mains light.

Its fun either way.
