Me and my family have invested in a tent and are virgins to camping and are planning to book up for a week about whitsun time.i have noticed on various sites there are different pitches and was wondering what a hardstanding pitch is and what are the best pitches for tents.
hardstanding pitch is exactly what it says it is, hard. more often than not a bed of stone chippings, not very comfy if your in a tent. in my oppinion dont think you could beat a grass pitch for a tent it`s more comfort and easier to get the pegs in .
------------- fresh air, lager and no work. who could want more?
Generally Ben hardstanding pitches are for vans and motorhomes to stop damage to the grass with the wheels. You could request one if you didn't fancy getting your groundsheet dirty! But you'd need a bit of padding underneath.
Hi Most site with quarry waste filling have a membrane about six in below the filling and the sites refuse tents and awnings to be pegged on this type of hard standing.
There are a few private site that accept tents on all weather hard standings filled with pea gravel, what the base is I do not know, possibly puddled with clay?? but the members who have stayed at these sites say they are fine, no damage to ground sheets, you just require longer than normal pegs.

Not all hardstandings are unsuitable for tents. Some are a honeycomb of plastic embedded in the grass which would be suitable.
Hi Margaret
We did stay on a site with a pitch like you say and did not realise until we were on the pitch it had the inset. The trouble I believe is that the mud will come through the plastic for tent use but it will stop the ground been dug up with vehicle wheels spinning.
