Hi I'm a newbie, but am very excited about camping this summer. i am planning to buy a Gelert Lokon Vario 6 but was wondering if it would be safe/ enough room to cook inside?

Also wasn't sure whether it's worth getting the sun canopy, it's so difficult form the internet to judge the size of these things. Thanks in advance LLT

Hello longlegted

I am sure you are aware that like life itself, nothing can be guarenteed as safe.  Everyone has to constantly make there own decisions about their own safety.

The obvious and unavoidable fact is that the risks are increased by cooking inside the tent but each of us needs to decide it we can safely manage that risk in our own particular circumstances.

Personaly I have always cooked in tents.  As I now no longer have the "blessing" of children running around this is not as great a challenge as it used to be.

Not very helpfull I am afraid but I realy think that each of us has to make our own decisions.  Anyone not confident enough about doing that should perhaps opt for the safest choice and go down the takeaway in bad weather.

Couldn't leave your first post unanswered. :)

Hello LLT I actually have a gelert lockon vario 6 for sale it was used for 10 days last year and I was going to use it in June too but trying to put it up alone I snaped 2 pole sections..Let me know if your interested..
Also I did cook in mine as the front "arc" will drop down allowing any smells steam ect to go out of the front It also gives you a great view whilst cooking. This is how it looks from the inside.

Oh dear...the cooking in a tent problem is raised once again, Be prepared for visitations from the forum safety officers. You should NEVER cook in tents according to these people and should always be looking skywards for falling meteorites. You should be cooking a minimum of a half a mile from your tent and if frying eggs you should be wearing a flame proof boiler suit, a welding mask and protective gloves. Myself ? I ignore the advice and prepare and cook food in the tent.

i listened to both sides of this question and decided on the safest for me. We have a 6 year old child and i felt safer buying a kitchen tent.It also frees up a lot of room because the kitchen area is out of the main tent.

We have a tunnel tent so no porches etc to cook under.

The best thing about this site is you get different opinions and then decide for yourself.

thank you your posts. i didn't realise that i was opening such a controversial thread! i guess i need to weigh it all up as you say. i do have to children who will be 2 and 4 in the summer. but i will not be camping alone so they can be entertained while i cook. would a gazebo with wind breaks be enough space/ windproof?? would love feed back from other types of set up. thank you

in my gallery  you can see our tent and kitchen tent..

not many people advise gazebos, some sites dont allow them (another  controversial thread  )

Most people who choose to buy extra get a kitchen tent ,dayroom or utility tent

Hi there. Just to say, we use a gazebo as communal living area when we camp with our extended family, and yes, have been known to cook under it, when we camped in rainy weather. No problems.
