To be honest you should generally be ok leaving your tent with gear inside but obviously you would not leave cash, cards etc whilst away from the tent. Most people are like minded and honest.Thats not to say it can't happen,if you are staying on campsites you should be ok.If its any consolation I have been backpacking/camping for 30 + years and never had anything taken from my tent...enjoy..regards john.b.

Agree that it is usually ok to leave your general stuff in the tent, just make sure that you take any valuables with you when you leave.

Also I always take mobile phone, handbag, camera etc in sleeping pod with me at night.

I've never had the experience of being robbed, but have heard from people who have. The best tip i could give you is to get to know those camping around you ,sort of a neighbourhood watch. If you leave the sight let someone near know. If they see somebody near your tent they can let themselves be seen, they don't have to say anything. Put yourself in a thief's place , if you were seen near someones property with intent to steal you wouldn't go ahead with it if there was someone looking at you.

I agree with everyones comments me and hubby have been camping a few times and every time the tent has been fine, just dont leave cash in there but everything else is fine.  The first time we went we were a bit cautious but it was fine!

Just enjoy everything about it, I didnyt think it would be something I would like but I love it and trying to get hubby to go for Easter but he wants to stay in a caravan but I want to CAMP!!!

hi i would agree with all the posts here but a good tip i use is on the inner zip pull of the door of yor tent tie a small guy line and peg this on the inside so its not seen . when someone who doesn't know its there they will try the outter zip and it won't open because of the peg they will then be put of and will be worried people might be in the tent  hope you can under stand this and it makes sence lol

Also get all your stuff on your house insurance in case the worst happens - but in my limited experience we haven't had or heard of anyone having anything stolen - we take cards, phones and cameras with us as above.

Can I just say that under no circumstances padlock yourself inside a tent during the night for security, if you want to know why then search for a video of a modern tent catching fire !!! Fumbling for a padlock and key whilst the tent melts to your skin is not ideal !!!

You would be suprised at how many people lock themselves inside a tent lol

Hi
I would say Vango Man had it right. I have never had anything stolen in a lifetime of camping. But it is always worth asking the managers if a Public right of way goes through the site, We always ask and avoid these sites.
St Neots C&C Club site in Cambridgeshire as a public footpath and both tents and caravan campers do lose things to the local thief's.
You can get a B------ A---- but It is more than my life on this forum is worth to say it.
By the way Steven the one I bought is still opperating in my camping store
Rex.

PS The right of way only really affects sites near to town and cities.

All the info above holds true, I've camped for years without having anything taken, campers generally look out for each other.  I've even gone out for the day and left my ipod on the seat of my car with the window down and the car unlocked!  (silly mistake but it happens)  either way everything was where i left it when i returned.

Also NEVER lock yourself in for the night, you need to be able to get out of a tent fast if the worst happens and it catches fire, it is incredible how fast a modern tent becomes totally engulfed.

Please dont get scared by this, just be prepared and enjoy the camping, its usually a friendly and fun atmosphere!!

I think I may have to buy something luminous to hang on the tent zipper now I have read this. Have never been camping before as I was a bit weary of the security aspect. Think I will have to take some homemade wine and get plastered so I can go to sleep!

:)

We will have our furry friend though, she may be small but her bark makes her sound bigger than she is.

Dont worry fellow stokie,we started camping last year and considering that i had never slept in a tent before (not even in a friends garden) we loved it. every one is so friendly and helpful , the first night you will be listening for noises but the only noise you will hear will be the wind or maybe traffic, and after the first night you'll wonder what all the fuss was about. dont worry you'll love it and when you get home you will be itching to go again.
