I am taking my dog, anna-belle, camping for the first time this Easter we do not have a SIG.  She is a 2 year old Jack Russell and fairly well behaved but does anybody have any useful tips for taking dogs camping.

Hiya,

We went camping for the first time last year and took our dog.

We didn't have a SIG and was hard work in the tent but luckily we had one of these

absolutely invaluable if like mine will be off at the first opportunity!

If you can get them used to a cage it is great. They can sleep in it and if you need to go to the showers you can lock them up for a short time. ALso when putting up the tent etc you knpw where they are. Maddy has a screw in anchor but can wrap herself round any chair or table instantly.

We took our two staffs last year and they were a total credit to us - we bought two of the canvas type crates and they slept in those at night time and they could be folded up during the day while they were on there tie-out lines and on those corkscrew thingys.

We did have windbreaks too although they were more for keeping people/other dogs out than they were for keeping our dogs in as they were very very well behaved our neighbours didnt even realise we had two dogs they were so well behaved :) our dogs so enjoyed themselves and loved the beach, and many many dog friendly places we went to.

we are considering taking our looney jack russell camping, but may have to try somewhere local so if she is a pain in the bum we can nip home with here and leave her at lyndas mums as usual.pity when we always meet well-behaved dogs wherever we go[apart from the one that bit molly at blue dolphin a few years ago,and its owners had in fact asked us to look after it whilst the nipped out!]we will watch this space.

Hello Brewood Camper

Dogs love camping as much, if not more than us lot do. Lots to see, sniff and pee on, although squirrels laugh at them, it's their space for a while. If you are settled and happy, anna-belle will be too. As long as she knows where her bed, treats, toys, water are, she'll stay close to you and her new exciting home.

Do you think she may get out without a SIG?

Or if she's knackerd from a long walk and all that guarding, will she sleep next to you in her warm bed?

No doom and gloom here but you may want to check where the nearest vet is. Is she chipped, or put your mobile number on her collar tag, your home address and number may confuse things if the worst happens. I guess you know not to put anna-belle on her tag.

You'll both love it.

Hey Dhasi, lovely staff you have there - we have a 5 month old Black Brindle called Ruby - our first staff and oh boy is she fun!   Looking forward to taking her camping this year - her crate will come in handy I am sure.  Always taken our old Lab with us but she never went anywhere so no need for tying up,  I think it will be a different matter with Ruby!

Having said that - our old girl used to get out when we had no SIG and wander around looking in bins in the night - naughty!!!!!  I feel much safer knowing they can't escape - I would go the crate route, Ruby loves hers (really!)

Yes she's chiped, tagged etc she loves walks and will sleep with the children in there pod.  She is a nervous dog and not very good off the lead but for a small dog she is friendly and does not bark that much.

Our best investment for the dogs camping experience was the dog 'basket' that goes in a stuff bag.  He is a very friendly dog, but off lead runs around like a lunatic.  We have the spiral ground anchor and lead which he insists on wrapping round his legs, but as soon as we purchased the dog basket he had somewhere to settle and was all the more confortable for it.

Hi I use two screw in doo dars and a chew proof cable to give my big lad a good running chain area. He is fine as long as our camp in not invaded by other people or dogs. The funny thing is that even though he is a mastiff rotty cross and is 91/2 stone he is scared of owls... I would just like to add hastily that I am not bragging about my doggies size when we had him as a pup I could fit him in the palm of my hand... We had no idea what he was crossed with or that he would get so big... and yet be such a softee. So the morale is when you get a puppy size means NOTHING !!
P.S may be a stupid question but what is a SIG? thought is may be Stake in Ground but was not sure...

Doh !! just read a bit more Sewn in Groundsheet right?.. hehehe We use a dog crate (see my photos) in my opinion they are they best way of having the peace of mind that you dog is safe. However your dog will need to be trained to use one. It would be an unpleasant experience for your pooch just to bodge um in a crate without practice ( and treats), if you do they may think thy have done something wrong.. and hey it's their holiday too!

We took our dog first in a cheap Tesco tent without a SIG, we couldnt relax in the tent of an evening eating and drinking as he had to be constantly on the lead, we tried putting bags, the fridge, the storage tubs and everything we could find around the edge to stop him from getting out but it was no use as he could just go down between the flysheet and bedroom pod inner and out he was, we immediately got a tent with a SIG and we were laughing the next season. We dont shut the bedroom zip at night so he can have wander around the tent at night, find a comfy place to kip (which is usually on the bottom of my sleeping bag) and I am much more relaxed and chilled about the whole thing. It improved it all so much for us that we got another puppy and it is even more enjoyable.
We also have some doggie proof windbreaks (they are expensive) so sitting outside our two dogs dont have to be on the lead either, it means that we can sunbathe, cook and chill with the tent door open and the dogs can rome wherever they want.
If you can borrow a tent with a SIG I would recommend it, take plenty of doggie toys, his blanket/bed from home, food bowls and food/treats, one of those corkscrew thingies for outside, doggie poo bags and I also take a jumper for my lot just in case they are cold and a collapsible dog bowl that I keep in my handbag to give the doggies water when we are out.

when we first started camping we had a 2 year old staffie. she took it all in stride and behaved wonderfully - we have a screw in lead holder for while we were just milling around, and slept with us in the pod. we eventually moved up to a trailer tent 4 years later. Sadly she only had 1 holiday with us in this before she died unexpectedly - however she still slept with us and never once tried to escape - we never even used the screw in half the time! we now have a new staffie puppy - still only 6 months old. We're taking a crate for her, but imagine she'll end up in our bed at night! The screw in lead holder will be a must for her!!! My advice would be chill out and relax, otherwise your dog will pick up on it and react accordingly. Enjoy!!
