Always look for the easy option     when I took my dogs and was alone I showered in the evening . I took hounds for a walk put them in the car and went for shower once this became a routine they were fine.  Also less people walking about once dusk falls so less to excite them     Now dogs have gone to doggie heaven but I carry a car shower, if I had had one of these years ago I would have used it instead of leaving them.  Would also have come in handy for the dogs

Are you sure its not a Territorial Army Camp (site) your going to? 

Our dog is the same at home. Barks at every little noise. But on a site, there are just too many new noises that he is more likely to just listen than react.

Also, in the confines of a tent or small van like ours, we can react to any sign of him getting agitated to the point of a bark, almost before he does.

We never leave the dog alone in the van. That is just our way and nothing against those that choose to do so with their pooches. If he stays alone anywhere, it is in the car and for no more than 30 minutes with apropriate ventilation.

We also have a Locking Lead that cannot be cut. This is attached by another lock to an imovable ring in the car. Anyone attempting to Dogknap him would need to cut his head off.

A lot of kennels will be happy to take a dog just for a few hours or day while you go elsewhere. I have a friend in Cornwall who boards dogs in her home and will take a dog for a day too.

Ooh - that wasn't meant to happen!

Fran, where in Cornwall is your friend as we are going for hols in July/Aug & will be looking for a day or short term boarding kennel so we can leave our pooch safely whilst taking the little ones out to dog free places.

And thanks for the recommendation of the car shower, I'm not sure I'd want to get showered in my car tho, it would ruin the upholstery ...

Anyway, seriously, re leaving her in the car,  I would never leave her in the car for more than a few mins.  And, getting showered in the evening sounds like a really good idea.

As far as going to places where dogs aren't welcome, I don't go to them!  I took her away with me for a week in a cottage in Pembrokeshire last week, and if dogs weren't welcome, we didn't go, so I'd never need to board her but I guess it always worth bearing in mind in case of emergencies.

Update on camping with my woofer.

Well, at Easter she stayed in the car while I battled with the wind trying to put the tent up.  Having finally managed to get the tent up a big gust came along and broke a pole!  Then another gust broke it in another place.  I gave up and went home and she never got out of the car! 

This (last) weekend was more successful.  It was a bit of a shame to see her tethered so much, but as it turned out her barking wasn't a problem at all.  She barked occasionally, as you'd expect, but not constantly as I'd worried about!  I think she was just too interested in everything that was going on.

She was good as gold, and made a great furry foot warmer at the bottom of my sleeping bag!

Can't wait to take her again!

We normally go camping as a couple, with the dog but next Thursday I am heading off for 5 days on my own, with the dog and, like you, he will be put in the car when I am in the showers etc.

The ruling about not leaving him/her in the unit alone is where you go away for the day. Then you cannot leave your pet in the tent/caravan/whatever.

All rules on Camping/Caravan Parks are common sense really. Considerate owners would not do these things anyway but not all campers are considerate or responsible so rules have to be made.

Your dog will probably love camping more than you do. All these new smells and places to explore will put him in canine heaven and cuddling up with Dad at his level, well 'nuff said.

I use a retractible lead on a Lead Anchor Screw. You will find them in any pet shop.
