Numerous people have told me how they started off with a tent, then "moved on"/"progressed" to a caravan.

Does anyone see this as progression? To me camping is the real thing and more fun. Caravans are the easy option, and you become the hate figure of every motorist in the country, with some justification.

I don't think I would ever ditch the canvas for those fibreglass slugs

Thanks, but no thanks. The whole point is, each to their own. What floats your boat, may sink my rubber duck. End of. Thread locked and edited to avoid the pointless sniping.

There are advantages and disadvantages too everything in the UKCS world.

For us with our trailer tent:

ADVANTAGES:

Storage in garage
Cars back seats can be moved for items not kept in trailer tent permanent. Even with space for dogs travelling pen/cage.

DISADVANTAGES

Can't take the cats with us.
Can't go away all year camping.

>>>  Caravans are the easy option, and you become the hate figure of every motorist in the country, with some justification. <<<

The only time I have ever seen caravans slowing the traffic is when they are stuck behind some great pondorous slow moving bit of farm equipment that is too wide to allow safe overtaking.

Ofcourse, those behind the caravan only see the caravan and so that must be the one that is slowing everything up.

I tow my caravan at 60mph which is all that the law will allow me to do. If that is too slow for you then up yours Jimmy.

I think you'd get some different answers to this one depending on which forum you post it in!

.....................................................................................................

and there was the first reply! which was my point.

I'm not here to wind people up - just expressing my feelings on what I've been on the receiving end of Ann. If you're going to react defensively and suggest that everyone is all in one happy family, then in your words "you just think they do"

I don't see it as progression myself declan, just different choices by different people with different circumstances and preferences and as Anne points out, it isn't always posible to put people into neat pigeon holes.  Over the years due to changing family circumstances I have camped in just about every unit imaginable but each has been to fit the circumstances of the time rather than any idea about progressing toward an ultimate goal.

As my own reasons for camping are primarily aimed at experiencing a closer contact with nature and an escape from the excesses of the modern world I naturally tend towards the minimalist end of camping and enjoy nothing better than a bivi bag under a tarp halfway up a mountain.  Other people’s reasons for camping might be totally different to mine and lead them in an entirely different direction.

That said, there is snobbery in most aspects of life, it's inevitable that some caravaners would suffer from it just as some tenters do.

hooray for rozinante!

cheers for some good Yorkshire common sense on this. That's the kind of feedback I was after - not that I'd infiltrated some secret society.

I can relate to the tendancy towards minimalist, though I understand it can't suit everyone

Put it this way.

We are both on benefits. As such do we in your eyes have the right to own our trailer tent and as such therefore have a holiday?

I think so.

2plus1

whether you're on benefits or not has no bearing on it. everyone is entitled to a holiday

I will be there with my caravan then!!!

the point is that in my experience a lot of people regard caravans as a step up from camping

I regard them as entirely different experiences, which they are

I have friends who used tents all the time but have now got a folding caravan as it is easier for them now that they are both in their 70s they still enjoy camping  but would you rather they still used a tent so that they can say they are camping. They dont think they have progressed to a caravan but that they can still enjoy their breaks. Everyone to their own thing. There is enough trouble in this world today without any starting on this great site.

Does it matter who thinks what about tents or caravans?

Perhaps some people should get out more.

Hey, I've seen some cats who go camping, 2plus1!

(Just so long as they don't decide to scale the neighbouring tents!  )
