has anyone else had the trouble I have had 2nite? I'm a bit grumpy because of it!
Basically been watching my bid on a camping item all nite and SUDDENLY it goes £7 above my top bid. so methinks, "se la vie"...but then I get a second chance offer within moments asking me to pay my max bid????
mmm....I scent a bit of scuddugery going on...? this item was through a power seller, so is this their latest ruse to get max price on their items even when there are no other bidders?
Has anyone else experienced this? Mucho dissapointed with ebay...doesn't seem honest somehow....
Was it different bidders that went higher than you? If so, check out their profiles and go through their feedback to see if there are any reoccuring names. How long after the auction ended were you offered the second chance? Do some investigations and go on your gut feeling or how desparate you are for the item. We are also suspicious of things like this and if it looks like someone is being greedy or taking the we say stuff them.
Hi dudkat72, I've been in such a strop, Ive been to a camping website store and just ordered it....I was in a tant! (temper-temper!!)
But I only thought about it as a friend told me about this happening on ebay...perhaps I've just checked and a bidder has apparently "bought" the item...?
confused now, but I still live in hope, bidding for a funky windbreak which I have to pick up, so feel that this is pretty honest...
I know of a few people that do this when selling, they have multiple accounts and use them to bid on an item they are selling and that way they can see what the maximum bid is off a genuine seller then offer them it as a second chance.
They only get away with it if they list ghost items and then pretend to buy them with ghost accounts thus getting feedback for other accounts.
I would email them saying you will pay whatever price you were at before you got gazumped and see what they say

If the answer may offend you then dont ask the question in the first place !!
Could be the situation that they have more than one of the item for sale, just not listed it with multiple availablity to save fees. I've had this happen to me before, all within ebay rules. If your not sure about it then don't take the chance on buying it.
Something else to take note of is ebay is not as cheap as people think anymore, if it is a second hand item you are buying then you may get a bargain but if it is new then always google it, you may be suprised how cheap you can get it elsewhere, some sellers list cheap buy now prices but huge p&p charges. I have found a lot of sites that may be same price as ebay but with free p&p. It takes 2 mins to google something and may save you some pennies

My husband sells stuff on ebay ... cos he has lots of this items, he sometimes offers people who have bit lower than the winner an item - at their highest bid if he wants to accept that too - does that make sense? might be an explanation -
The thing to ask yourself is - were you happy to pay what you bid? If so, you got what you wanted...?
well its the next morning and I've calmed down now!!!
Thanks for all your advice on this, I am still not sure if it was an honest transaction, but ho-hum, I've bought it from somewhere else now! Someone told me about checking prices on Kelkoo too, as this often brings up cheaper prices than Ebay.
Just checked my bidding on my windbreaks and still aok there....wish me luck!
If you think the seller was dishonest you can ask ebay to investigate - its against their rules to artificially bid something up by asking a friend to bid or using alternate identities. You could get them thrown off the site if anything is proved.
I got this once before " a second chance ",when I contacted the seller he knew nothing about it,the item had sold to the highest bidder and that was that. Should have dug deeper to find out what was happening ..but did'nt bother just assumed it was one more con artist trying their luck...

if you dont want to be out bid at the last moment you should register on a site called auctionsniper.com.you get 5 free 'snipes' and you insert your item number on the product your bidding for you and tell the program what you maximum bid is and what time you want to put it on.
i did it last week, told it to add my bid 5 seconds before the end and hey presto im the winner!
I knit and sell hats on ebay, to save on listing fees and Gallery fees, which can add up to a tidy sum in a month, I often list just one hat in a certain size/colour, even though I have a couple more exactly the same at home. If the hat sells and I have another two bidders who lost out and their last bids were reasonable amounts, I give them second chance offers. I make two more sales for the cost of one listing fee and one Gallery fee. Maybe this seller did the same thing?
