Hi..Im new to this forum, but this looks like the best place to seek some advice :0) lol
I am the owner of a Conquest 4 Person Tent from circa 1984! its still a great tent, but is not larger enough to contain my growing family. Its easy to get completely overwhelmed by the array of new tents available, but having been used to cotton flysheets in the past, I would like to upgrade, but still keep to this type of tent fabric. Although the choice is limited with this, I am almost settled on the Khyam Indiana 8 TC. Has anyone owned or used this tent before? Your experiences and knowledge would be gratefully received. http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/tents/p/Khyam-Indiana-8-TC/449
We have the Campus Indiana 8 from the days when Khyam were Campus, but it's not the poly cotton version, which looks very nice. Space wise it's a fantastic tent, we are a family of four, two adults and children 14 and 11, who each have their own bedroom. Good living space and very sturdy in wind and no problems (touch wood!) with leaks or rain. We love our Indy and it looks pretty much the same in the polycotton version. It's not good for us because we have nowhere to get it dry should we come home with a wet tent.
Good luck with it.

Aug/Sept - Leekworth

Hi Two Tents.
I have never camped in a Khyam, But thinking back to the storms last year. It was the tent poles that proved defective, a couple of members showed us photographs of collapsed Khyam tents caused by the strong winds.
May be worth finding out if they have used a stronger pole system on the more expensive Polycotton tents.
Regards
Rex

I would imagine they would have to have stronger poles to support a polycotton tent, especially if it gets worse. Our tent has withstood some very strong winds by the way with no problems with the poles.

We bought one last summer, the poles are a fair bit more substantial than the standard fabric ones. We liked it although it leaked - not dripping but the fabric got wet and there were a few drips around a couple of window seams - one night in really heavy rain, not sure if that's usual for polycotton or not or if we need to proof some of it. We were camping with our baby who slept really well in it, definitely quieter in wind. Having said that we're now looking for a smaller lighter tent for weekend camping as it's very heavy/bulky.
We bought one last year and sent it back. The reason was that one of the poles snapped and a second was fractured and going the same way. We used it for one holiday during which time we erected the tent twice.
I think they have changed the design slightly as we did not have a SIG but I don't know if they have changed the poles which were very heavy and not up to the job.
I would agree that it was very heavy and bulky.
Someone else on here had exactly the same problem as us, so this was a definate design fault.
allya and gingerlily...many thanks for the feedback..certainly food for thought. I was concerned about the sturdiness of the poles and with the weight of the fabric, that this could cause issues
The poles are really thick compared to the ones you get on the nylon tents and extremely heavy so you would think they would be up to the job but they just seem to fracture and split when you bend them into place.
So unless they have changed these I wouldn't bother with this tent. We ordered it online and when it came I really was surprised at how heavy it was. We then replaced it with a Cabanon frame tent which really is a lot easier to put up and we knew what we were getting because we already had two small Cabanons anyway.
The price was what tempted us to buy it in the first place but afterwards we decided to get a bit more money together and buy the Cabanon.
we had the same experience as gingerlily with the polycotton Indiana - one pole snapped the second time we put the tent up and on closer inspection almost every section of every pole was going to go the same way
- we felt that it was a design fault because the pole sections are thick but quite short meaning that they have a lot of pressure on the end of each section when they bend and are perhaps not as flexible as they need to be.
We contacted Khyam and they said they had not had any other reports of problems and that the poles were fine. The retailer refused to give us a full refund - said he'd replace the poles but that then the tent would be out of guarantee so we wouldn't have been able to get any refund if the same thing had happened again.
This is the beauty of this forum, where experiences can be shared. I am glad I did not rush in to the purchase of this tent and although I am sure there are owners of this tent that are happy with it, but I have heard enough to put me off! I will scan the forum to get some new ideas on what type of tent to purchase.
